“Deep localisation is about reducing our exposure to external disruptions by strengthening domestic capabilities and progressively owning a larger share of the value chain,” Takeuchi said. He added that conditions for deeper localization in India have become more favorable as global supply chains undergo restructuring. Government support through production-linked incentive schemes and the India Semiconductor Mission is helping create capabilities in critical areas and reduce strategic dependencies. The Indian automobile industry is expanding capacity to address growing demand, but Takeuchi said manufacturers must also account for market fluctuations when planning new facilities and production capabilities. “Advance planning of capacity expansion and building flexibility in manufacturing is the key to address this issue,” he said. These alerts give the automaker and its suppliers additional time to prepare and take countermeasures. “The objective is not to predict every disruption. That is impossible. The objective is to identify risks early enough to take countermeasures,” Takeuchi said. The approach is intended to improve preparedness by giving companies earlier visibility into potential risks rather than attempting to eliminate uncertainty altogether.

Takeuchi also warned that greater digitalization is bringing growing cybersecurity risks across the automotive industry. While automotive companies are strengthening their cybersecurity systems, hackers are also becoming more sophisticated, he said. Companies therefore need not only stronger defenses but also contingency plans that can restore business operations quickly if an attack succeeds. “We have to ensure that we stay one step ahead of them,” Takeuchi said. At the same time, companies must be prepared for the possibility of a cyber incident and maintain systems capable of minimizing disruption and restarting operations quickly. This makes operational recovery an important part of supply-chain resilience alongside preventive cybersecurity defenses.

Together, these priorities are intended to help companies respond more effectively when supply-chain or operational challenges emerge. “The last decade taught us how to withstand disruption. The next decade must help us become stronger because of disruption,” he said.
