Quick Takeaways
  • FAW-Volkswagen is advancing NEV manufacturing at its Tianjin plant, targeting mass production of two new models by 2026.
  • The facility is being positioned as a flexible, multi-energy hub supporting ICE, hybrid, and battery electric vehicles.
On December 14, FAW-Volkswagen NEV production plans in Tianjin moved a step closer to realization as the Tianjin Municipal People’s Government confirmed mass manufacturing of two new vehicle models by 2026. The announcement reinforces FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd.’s long-term commitment to strengthening its multi-energy vehicle manufacturing footprint in China.
The update highlights steady progress at FAW-Volkswagen’s Tianjin facility, where preparations are underway to support fuel-powered, hybrid, and battery electric vehicle production within a unified manufacturing ecosystem.
FAW-Volkswagen NEV Production Enters Trial Phase in Tianjin
The AU336 model has officially entered trial production at the FAW-Volkswagen Tianjin Branch. This pilot phase is being carried out alongside five existing mass-produced models, ensuring production continuity while validating new processes and components.
To support the AU336 program, FAW-Volkswagen onboarded nine new suppliers, including three based in Tianjin. This localized sourcing approach is expected to improve supply-chain resilience and operational efficiency as FAW-Volkswagen NEV production scales up.
Rigorous Validation to Support FAW-Volkswagen NEV Production
More than 100 AU336 vehicles are scheduled for initial trial builds. These units will undergo close to 100 validation tests covering key performance and safety parameters, including:
  • Corrosion resistance under varied environmental conditions
  • Structural fatigue and long-term durability
  • Collision and crashworthiness assessments

This extensive validation phase is designed to ensure that FAW-Volkswagen NEV production meets both regulatory requirements and internal quality benchmarks before mass rollout.
Production Line Upgrades Planned Ahead of 2027 NEV Models
Looking beyond 2026, FAW-Volkswagen has confirmed that two additional new energy vehicle models will enter production at the Tianjin site in 2027. To enable this expansion, existing production lines are scheduled for renovation and technical upgrades during 2026.
These upgrades will enhance manufacturing flexibility, allowing the plant to efficiently handle internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid models, and battery electric vehicles on shared lines.
Tianjin Plant Positioned as a Multi-Energy Manufacturing Hub
FAW-Volkswagen aims to transform its Tianjin facility into a comprehensive production base capable of supporting diverse propulsion technologies. By integrating FAW-Volkswagen NEV production with conventional and hybrid vehicle manufacturing, the company is aligning its operations with evolving market demand and China’s broader electrification roadmap.
This phased and technology-neutral approach underscores FAW-Volkswagen’s strategy to balance innovation, scale, and manufacturing efficiency while preparing for long-term shifts in the automotive landscape.
