Quick Takeaways
- VinFast has operationalized its first EV manufacturing footprint in Southeast Asia outside Vietnam, strengthening its ASEAN growth strategy.
- The Indonesia plant combines scalable capacity, deep localization targets, and multi-segment EV expansion plans.
On December 15, VinFast strengthened its global expansion strategy with the official launch of its EV manufacturing plant Indonesia in Subang, West Java. Completed in just 17 months, the facility represents VinFast’s fourth operational manufacturing base worldwide and its first production site in Indonesia and Southeast Asia outside Vietnam.
VinFast EV Manufacturing Plant Indonesia: Scale and Investment Vision
Developed across a 171-hectare industrial site, the VinFast EV manufacturing plant Indonesia is backed by a total planned investment exceeding USD 1 billion. The project follows a phased development approach, allowing capacity expansion in line with market demand across Indonesia and future export destinations.
Phase one alone represents an investment of more than USD 300 million and delivers an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 electric vehicles. The facility is engineered to scale up to 350,000 vehicles per year, positioning Indonesia as a key production and export hub in VinFast’s global manufacturing network.
Highly Automated Production and Integrated Operations
The Subang facility is designed as a fully integrated and highly automated manufacturing ecosystem. Core operations include body welding, painting, final assembly, quality inspection, and internal logistics, all optimized to ensure consistent quality and production efficiency at scale.
Advanced automation enables flexibility across multiple vehicle platforms while maintaining strict quality control standards. This setup supports VinFast’s ambition to deliver competitively priced electric vehicles without compromising manufacturing precision or reliability.
Localization Strategy and Workforce Development
A central pillar of the VinFast EV manufacturing plant Indonesia strategy is progressive localization. VinFast plans to achieve a localization rate of over 40 percent by 2026, rising to 60 percent by 2029 and 80 percent from 2030 onward. A dedicated supplier park is planned to support this localization roadmap.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate between 5,000 and 15,000 direct jobs. The project contributes to Indonesia’s broader goals of strengthening its EV ecosystem, industrial capability, and skilled manufacturing workforce.
Initial Models and Future Product Expansion
Production at the Subang plant will initially focus on right-hand-drive electric passenger vehicles for the Indonesian market.
VinFast has also confirmed plans to expand its product lineup with electric two-wheelers and an electric MPV starting in 2026.
With its scalable capacity, localization roadmap, and diversified product strategy, the VinFast EV manufacturing plant Indonesia reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to Southeast Asia while accelerating regional adoption of electric mobility.
