Quick Takeaways
  • The NIO ES9 becomes China’s largest and most powerful luxury electric SUV yet.
  • Its CATL battery and LiDAR-based ADAS position it as a technology flagship for 2026.
NIO ES9 flagship electric SUV made its first official appearance after being listed in China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology vehicle registry, giving the market an early look at NIO’s next-generation luxury electric SUV. The filing confirms that this upcoming model will sit at the top of NIO’s SUV portfolio, combining large dimensions, premium positioning, and advanced electric vehicle technologies.
The NIO ES9 measures 5,365 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width, and 1,870 mm in height, making it the largest electric SUV the company has ever announced. It surpasses the current ES8, which is 5,280 mm long, 2,010 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall, clearly positioning the ES9 as NIO’s new flagship SUV built for the high-end electric vehicle segment.
To put its size into perspective, even some of the world’s biggest electric SUVs, such as large American luxury models, are only slightly longer. However, those vehicles are not sold in China, giving the NIO ES9 flagship electric SUV a unique position in the domestic premium EV market where ultra-large electric SUVs remain rare.
NIO ES9 flagship electric SUV targets the ultra-premium segment
NIO’s co-founder and president, Qin Lihong, first revealed plans for this model last year, stating that the ES9 would be launched in the first half of 2026. He explained that the ES9 would adopt the same advanced technology platform used in NIO’s top-tier ET9 luxury sedan, which currently represents the brand’s most premium electric vehicle offering.
The ET9 starts at RMB 768,000 and is positioned as a full-size luxury electric sedan. By sharing its core technology architecture, the ES9 is expected to deliver a similar level of sophistication, comfort, and intelligent driving capabilities in a large SUV body style designed for families and executive users.
High-performance electric drivetrain and CATL battery technology
The NIO ES9 flagship electric SUV will be powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing a combined output of 520 kW, or about 697 horsepower. This setup places the ES9 firmly in the high-performance luxury SUV category while maintaining the smooth and silent driving experience expected from premium electric vehicles.
Battery packs for the ES9 will be supplied by CATL, one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers. While the filing does not yet disclose range or battery capacity, the use of CATL technology suggests a strong focus on energy density, reliability, and long-distance usability for this large electric SUV.
  • Dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain
  • 520 kW total system output
  • CATL-supplied battery technology
  • Premium architecture shared with the ET9 sedan

Design continuity with advanced sensing technology
Images from the regulatory filing show that the ES9 closely follows the design language of the ES8, maintaining a tall and upright SUV profile. One of the most notable exterior features is the roof-mounted ultra-long-range LiDAR unit, which indicates that NIO is equipping the ES9 with its latest driver-assistance and intelligent driving hardware.
This LiDAR system is designed to support high-level autonomous driving functions, improved object detection, and enhanced safety in complex traffic environments. By combining large-vehicle comfort with advanced sensing and software, the ES9 is being developed as a technology showcase as much as a luxury SUV.
With its massive dimensions, powerful electric drivetrain, CATL battery support, and next-generation smart driving features, the NIO ES9 is shaping up to become one of the most ambitious electric SUVs ever developed by a Chinese automaker, setting a new benchmark for size, technology, and premium positioning in the fast-growing electric vehicle market.
