BMW X1 LWB Targets First-Time Luxury Buyers
The newly launched BMW X1 LWB is expected to expand the company’s pool of first-time luxury car buyers in India, according to Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO of BMW Group India. Brar said buyers entering the luxury segment for the first time accounted for 50% of sales with the previous X1 and estimated that the share could increase by another 10 percentage points with the new model. Launched in India on Friday, the X1 LWB is positioned as an accessible luxury SUV for consumers upgrading from lower vehicle segments while also supporting BMW’s broader long-wheelbase strategy in the market.
Long-Wheelbase Strategy Gains Importance
The BMW X1 LWB receives an additional 110mm of overall length and wheelbase, delivering 150mm more rear-seat legroom. The model also incorporates features based on feedback from Indian customers, including a 360-degree surround-view camera and blind-spot monitoring. Its rear seat has been redesigned with additional cushioning and improved thigh support. The importance of long-wheelbase vehicles has also increased within BMW Group India, with Brar stating that 52% of the company’s current sales come from long-wheelbase models. The strategy is intended to strengthen product appeal by combining greater cabin space with features tailored to local customer expectations.
Pricing, Buyback and Local Manufacturing
Priced at ₹49.9 lakh, the BMW X1 LWB is offered with a 60% assured buyback after four years. The company sees the arrangement as a way to address resale value, which remains an important consideration for luxury car customers. The SUV is locally manufactured at BMW’s Chennai plant and has more than 50% localisation. Brar said increasing localisation is central to the company’s strategy because higher local content can help BMW pass manufacturing benefits to customers and support more competitive pricing. The company also wants to develop India as a larger manufacturing hub while continuing to increase localisation levels.
BMW Maintains Multi-Powertrain Strategy
BMW Group India continues to offer petrol, diesel and electric vehicles as part of a multi-powertrain strategy designed to respond to changing customer demand. Brar said electric vehicles currently represent 26% of BMW’s sales in India, compared with 16% for diesel and 58% for petrol. EV share has increased significantly from around 7–8% two years earlier to 21% last year and 26% currently. The company is therefore adjusting production according to demand, including balancing supply between electric and petrol models as customer preferences evolve.
EV Demand and Product Pipeline
Brar said the West Asia crisis and uncertainty surrounding crude prices have influenced the pace of EV sales growth, while also noting that electric vehicles have become mainstream among Indian consumers. The electric X1 has experienced an increase in its waiting period, indicating continued demand for the powertrain. BMW plans to remain flexible by balancing petrol and electric vehicle supply according to market requirements. At the same time, the company is pursuing an aggressive product offensive, having completed 13 of 25 planned product actions and targeting another 10 launches by the end of the year across SUVs, sedans and multiple powertrains.
Broader BMW Product Offensive Continues
The upcoming product programme is expected to cover different segments and powertrain configurations, reinforcing BMW’s strategy of maintaining a broad portfolio rather than relying on a single technology direction. Earlier launches included the X3, positioned above the X1 in the SUV range, the Mini Countryman C and the 5 Series. Brar indicated that further activity will extend toward the upper end of the portfolio and include petrol, diesel, electric, SUV and sedan models. The approach reflects BMW’s intention to respond quickly to changing consumer preferences while expanding its product presence across India’s premium vehicle market.
