Quick Takeaways
  • China’s first real-world liquid hydrogen heavy-duty truck demonstration validates long-haul viability beyond gaseous hydrogen limits.
  • Open-road operations in complex terrain confirm the operational readiness of liquid hydrogen fuel-cell trucks and refueling infrastructure.
On January 6, FAW Jiefang announced the launch of an open-road demonstration operation for FAW Jiefang liquid hydrogen heavy-duty trucks in Panzhihua, Sichuan. This marks China’s first real-world demonstration of liquid hydrogen HDTs, with the J6P liquid hydrogen tractor selected as the pilot vehicle.
FAW Jiefang Liquid Hydrogen Heavy-Duty Trucks Set New Range Benchmarks
The J6P liquid hydrogen tractor is equipped with a liquid hydrogen tank offering storage capacity in the 100 kg range, paired with a high-power fuel cell system. Under real-world driving conditions, the truck delivers a driving range exceeding 1,000 km, significantly higher than the 400–500 km typically achieved by gaseous hydrogen heavy-duty trucks currently in operation.
Real-World Refueling and Operations Validated
  • During the demonstration phase, support vehicles at civil liquid hydrogen refueling stations completed ultra-low-temperature liquid hydrogen refueling at approximately minus 253 degrees Celsius.
The refueling process was carried out safely and efficiently, validating the practicality of liquid hydrogen infrastructure for heavy-duty transport applications.
Performance Proven on Complex Mountain Roads
The demonstration project took place across complex mountainous road sections in Panzhihua. Throughout these demanding routes, the J6P operated smoothly under real and harsh conditions. The results highlighted the strong adaptability, operational stability, and high reliability of liquid hydrogen heavy-duty trucks in challenging terrains and extended-distance transport scenarios.
