Producing aluminum from recycled material offers substantial environmental advantages, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 97% compared with manufacturing aluminum from raw materials. Despite these benefits, recycling aluminum used in automotive extrusions has remained technically difficult because scrap materials often contain significant levels of impurities. These contaminants reduce material quality and limit the ability to recycle aluminum into equivalent high-grade products, making impurity management one of the industry's major technical challenges.
To overcome these limitations, the collaborative project has completed foundational research focused on impurity reduction technologies together with advanced processing techniques that neutralize the impact of remaining impurities. These technologies are intended to improve the quality and usability of recycled aluminum, enabling it to be reused in demanding automotive applications.
