Michelin Primacy 5 India Launch Marks Local Passenger Car Tyre Manufacturing Debut

Michelin India has officially introduced the Primacy 5, marking the company's first passenger car tyre to be manufactured locally in India. Produced at the Chennai manufacturing facility, the premium touring tyre has been engineered for sedans and SUVs and is compatible with internal combustion engine, hybrid and electric vehicles. The new product will be available across Michelin Tyres & Service outlets and nearly 800 authorised dealers nationwide from August as the company strengthens its position in India's premium replacement tyre market.

The company will initially concentrate on the replacement tyre business before evaluating opportunities to supply original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as production volumes increase. According to Shantanu Deshpande, Managing Director of Michelin India, building a strong presence in the replacement market remains the immediate priority, while the OEM business will be explored as manufacturing capacity expands.

The Primacy 5 will be offered in multiple sizes ranging from 16 inches to 22 inches, with prices starting at approximately ₹10,000 depending on tyre dimensions. Deshpande stated that local production fulfils the company's commitment announced around 18 months ago, confirming that passenger car tyres are now being manufactured at Michelin's Chennai facility.

Michelin Highlights Safety Performance of Primacy 5

Safety has been positioned as one of the primary strengths of the Primacy 5. Michelin says the tyre has been specifically developed and validated using vehicles commonly driven in India. It incorporates an optimised tread pattern, next-generation rubber compounds, along with Michelin's EverGrip and EverTread technologies to improve braking performance throughout the tyre's lifespan.

According to company claims, the Primacy 5 delivers a wet braking distance that is up to eight metres shorter than the average of competing premium tyres when new. Once worn, the braking advantage increases to nine metres. Michelin also reports approximately four metres shorter stopping distance under dry braking conditions compared with rival products.

Independent Braking Test Results

The performance assessments were conducted by Applus+ IDIADA at NATRAX in Indore during May and June 2026 using a Hyundai Creta fitted with 205/65 R16 tyres. Michelin commissioned these tests to compare the Primacy 5 against competing premium touring tyres.

Comfort, Durability and EV Readiness

Michelin states that the Primacy 5 achieved a comfort score around 9% higher than the average of competing tyres tested. Its redesigned tread pattern aims to minimise road noise and vibrations while maintaining durability over uneven road surfaces. The company also claims the tyre provides around 8% longer service life than its predecessor, the Primacy 4ST, based on mileage testing conducted on Indian roads.

Although the locally manufactured version uses the same fundamental rubber compounds, production equipment and quality standards as Michelin facilities worldwide, additional reinforcement materials have been incorporated to better withstand challenging Indian road conditions. According to Jean-François RENE, Executive Director of Michelin Chennai, these enhancements make the Indian specification slightly heavier while improving resistance to road hazards.

The Primacy 5 has also been engineered to support electric vehicles by accommodating their higher torque output, increased weight and different tyre wear characteristics. Michelin says rolling resistance has been reduced by 6.5% compared with the Primacy 4ST, which can contribute to lower fuel consumption in conventional vehicles and improved driving range for EVs.

Competition in India's Premium Touring Tyre Segment

The Primacy 5 will compete against established premium touring tyres including the Bridgestone Turanza 6i, Continental UltraContact UC6 and Yokohama BluEarth-GT Max AE51, which were also used in Michelin's comparative testing. The tyre will additionally compete with premium domestic offerings from CEAT, Apollo Tyres and MRF depending on vehicle segment and tyre size.

Growing Demand for Premium Tyres in India

Michelin's launch aligns with increasing consumer demand for larger premium passenger vehicles in India. According to SIAM, utility vehicles represented around 68% of domestic passenger vehicle sales during the first quarter of FY2026-27, with UV sales rising 28.6% year-on-year and overall passenger vehicle sales increasing 25.9% to a record 1.27 million units.

The premium vehicle trend is also evident in the luxury segment. Mercedes-Benz India's top-end vehicle sales increased by 16% during FY2025-26 and accounted for 27% of total sales. BMW India recorded annual sales of 17,299 units, representing 14% growth, while luxury electric vehicle sales in India expanded by 61% to 5,404 units. Michelin believes improved highways, longer driving distances and rising customer preference for safer, quieter and more comfortable vehicles are supporting demand for premium tyres.

Chennai Plant Expansion Plans

Michelin intends to broaden passenger car tyre production at its Chennai manufacturing facility by adding products including the Pilot Sport 5 and LTX Trail. Additional tyre sizes and product lines will be introduced progressively through the end of 2027. The Chennai factory has a combined production capacity of approximately 54,000 tonnes covering truck, bus and passenger car tyres, with further investments expected based on future market demand.

The company will continue prioritising the domestic market while retaining the option to export passenger car tyres from Chennai. Michelin already exports truck tyres manufactured at the facility to markets across North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Its retail footprint currently includes around 150 Michelin Tyres & Service outlets across India, with further expansion planned in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
