Quick Takeaways
  • Hearing-based audio personalization is now available at scale in mainstream vehicles through software.
  • Google built-in enables Nissan and INFINITI to deliver user-specific in-car audio without hardware changes.
On December 15, Nissan and INFINITI introduced the Personalized Sound App, marking a major step forward in in-car audio personalization. The new feature allows drivers to tailor sound output to their individual hearing profile, making Nissan and INFINITI the first automakers in the U.S. to deploy hearing-based audio customization at scale using Google built-in technology.
Available now on the Google Play Store, the Personalized Sound App can be downloaded at no extra cost on compatible Nissan and INFINITI vehicles already on the road. By integrating software intelligence directly into the infotainment system, the brands are redefining how drivers experience audio inside modern vehicles.
Personalized Sound App delivers hearing-based audio tuning
The Personalized Sound App guides users through a short, interactive hearing assessment displayed on the vehicle’s infotainment screen. Drivers listen to tones that vary by pitch and volume and respond by confirming audibility through on-screen prompts. The system then builds a customized audio profile unique to that individual.
Using the test results, the app automatically adjusts a 10-band equalizer covering frequencies from 50 hertz to 1,200 hertz. This ensures clearer vocals, balanced mids, and optimized bass tailored precisely to the driver’s hearing sensitivity rather than a generic factory preset.
Multi-driver support enhances everyday usability
Once configured, the Personalized Sound App stores individual profiles for multiple drivers within the same vehicle. Each profile loads automatically when the driver starts the vehicle, ensuring a consistent listening experience without manual adjustments.
According to Nissan’s product planning team, most users notice an immediate improvement in clarity and balance after completing the hearing test, highlighting the real-world impact of personalized audio tuning in daily driving.
Google built-in enables seamless software integration
The rollout of the Personalized Sound App underscores how Google built-in platforms are expanding the role of software in vehicle differentiation. Because the feature is app-based, eligible vehicles already on the road can access it via download, extending functionality beyond traditional model-year upgrades.
This approach reflects a broader industry shift toward software-defined vehicles, where user-centric features can be added, refined, or personalized through digital platforms rather than hardware changes.
