Fraunhofer FFB PreFab Research Facility Reaches Construction Milestone in Germany

The federal government is contributing up to EUR 750 million toward establishing the research infrastructure, while the North Rhine-Westphalia state government is investing around EUR 320 million, demonstrating long-term commitment to strengthening domestic battery technologies.

The first phase of the initiative, known as FFB PreFab, has been operational since the beginning of 2024. More than 140 scientists are currently working at the site on industry-scale battery cell production research and process development. The next development stage, FFB Fab, will significantly expand the research infrastructure by introducing gigafactory-scale production facilities covering more than 20,000 square meters.
