On July 8, Fraunhofer IWU revealed progress on the HAutoMont project, developed in collaboration with Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH. The initiative focuses on creating a hybrid-autonomous assembly system that blends manual operations with automated production to install passenger car underbody panels more efficiently while reducing manufacturing costs. In addition to improving current assembly operations, the project is intended to support the development of future production methods and component designs that are better suited for automated manufacturing.
For practical evaluation, the project team selected the aerodynamic underbody shielding panel used on the Germany-built VW ID.3. This lightweight component was chosen because it frequently undergoes modifications throughout the vehicle's lifecycle, making it an effective candidate for studying automation strategies and validating production concepts under evolving design requirements.
The hybrid production solution combines handling robots with automated screw-driving technology to complete the installation process. Vacuum grippers securely position the lightweight polypropylene panel before a robotic system accurately identifies the required mounting locations, inserts the fasteners, and tightens each screw automatically. Because the automated equipment is designed to operate alongside manual workstations, manufacturers can introduce the technology into existing production lines without requiring a fully automated factory environment.
The experience gained through HAutoMont is expected to contribute to both improved manufacturing workflows and future vehicle component development. By evaluating how automated systems interact with evolving part designs, the project partners aim to identify opportunities for greater production efficiency, improved automation compatibility, and lower manufacturing costs across future vehicle programs.
