Quick Takeaways
  • Two companies align their strengths to accelerate scalable electric propulsion for global OEMs.
  • The partnership targets faster commercialization of modular, corner-based electric drive units.
On December 29, REE Automotive Cascadia Motion electric drive unit development moved forward as REE Automotive Ltd., a specialist in software-defined vehicle platforms, announced a strategic, non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with Cascadia Motion, LLC. Cascadia Motion operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of BorgWarner Inc. The collaboration focuses on advancing next-generation electric propulsion solutions for global OEM electrification programs.
The agreement defines cooperation across manufacturing, commercialization, and sales activities centered on a next-generation electric drive unit built around REEcorner technology. This REE Automotive Cascadia Motion electric drive unit is intended to support scalable vehicle architectures while addressing efficiency, packaging flexibility, and integration requirements demanded by modern electric platforms.
Joint Development of a Next-Generation Electric Drive Unit
Under the outlined understanding, the electric drive unit will be jointly developed by REE Automotive and Cascadia Motion. The solution combines Cascadia Motion’s iM-125 drive unit, which integrates the motor and inverter, with REE’s corner-based architecture. This configuration is designed to enable compact packaging while supporting multiple vehicle segments.
Key technical highlights of the planned electric drive unit include:
  • Integrated motor and inverter architecture
  • Compatibility with REEcorner-based vehicle platforms
  • Modular design to support diverse OEM electrification strategies

Phased Commercialization and Distribution Strategy
As part of a phased commercial approach, REE Automotive is expected to grant Cascadia Motion an exclusive, time-limited option to distribute a uniquely packaged electric drive unit. This option focuses on accelerating market entry while aligning production volumes with OEM demand forecasts.
The REE Automotive Cascadia Motion electric drive unit is positioned to address:
  • Growing demand for modular electric propulsion systems
  • OEM requirements for faster time-to-market
  • Cost and supply-chain efficiencies through shared development

Manufacturing Support and Supply Network Access
To support production readiness, REE Automotive plans to provide Cascadia Motion with access to its existing electric drive unit assembly line, along with associated tooling, inventories, and supplier relationships. This approach is intended to streamline manufacturing scale-up and reduce initial capital barriers.
By combining engineering expertise with established manufacturing resources, the collaboration aims to strengthen competitiveness in the evolving electric vehicle supply chain while supporting global OEM electrification roadmaps.
