Quick Takeaways
  • Serial production of heavy-duty, off-road commercial vehicles has officially begun in Russia, strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity.
  • The Shushary facility launch combines rugged vehicle engineering with scalable industrial output and regional job creation.
On December 26, BAZ serial production of heavy commercial vehicles officially commenced at JSC Romanov’s manufacturing facility in Shushary, St. Petersburg, marking a significant step in strengthening domestic commercial vehicle manufacturing. The production program focuses on rugged, off-road-capable platforms designed for demanding industrial and logistics applications.
  • The current manufacturing lineup under BAZ serial production of heavy commercial vehicles includes chassis, dump trucks, tractor units, and flatbed trucks.
Every vehicle produced at the facility is engineered around a 6×6 drivetrain configuration, offering enhanced traction and stability across challenging terrains. Independent suspension systems further improve ride performance, while a ground clearance of 400 mm enables reliable operation in harsh operating environments.
Production Strategy and Vehicle Capabilities
Designed to support a wide range of commercial and industrial use cases, the newly launched vehicles emphasize durability, mobility, and adaptability. The standardized 6×6 architecture ensures consistent off-road performance, making the models suitable for construction, energy, defense logistics, and remote infrastructure projects. The independent suspension setup helps balance payload stability with operator comfort, even under heavy loads.
Planned Output and Manufacturing Scale-Up
Looking ahead, the facility plans to manufacture up to 600 vehicles during 2026 as part of its initial production phase. Based on market demand and operational readiness, annual output capacity can be expanded to as many as 2,000 units. This scalable approach allows the plant to respond efficiently to evolving commercial vehicle requirements while maintaining production quality.
Employment and Regional Impact
The start of serial production has already generated more than 800 jobs at the Shushary facility, contributing to regional employment growth and reinforcing the industrial ecosystem. The expansion supports skilled manufacturing roles and strengthens local supply chain engagement, aligning with broader industrial development goals.
