India Ethanol Blending Expansion AIDA Proposal for Flex-Fuel Vehicles

The push for cleaner and more secure energy solutions is intensifying in India as the All India Distillers’ Association (AIDA) has urged policymakers to accelerate ethanol adoption. In a communication addressed to India's transport ministry, the association highlighted the need to expand ethanol blending levels beyond the existing 20% threshold. This recommendation comes amid growing concerns over global crude oil price fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainties, positioning India ethanol blending expansion as a strategic response to strengthen long-term energy resilience.

AIDA Calls for Higher Ethanol Blending Targets

AIDA emphasized that India has already surpassed its E20 blending milestone ahead of schedule, driven by coordinated efforts between the government and industry stakeholders. Building on this progress, the association proposed increasing blending ratios to 30%, which could significantly reduce dependence on imported crude oil. Such a shift would not only help stabilize fuel costs but also enhance domestic energy independence, especially during periods of global supply disruptions.

Flex-Fuel Vehicles as a Key Enabler

The association strongly advocated for the rapid deployment of flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on a wide range of ethanol blends, including up to 100% ethanol. Drawing parallels with Brazil’s mature ethanol ecosystem, AIDA noted that such vehicles are essential for creating sustained demand. Without widespread adoption of these vehicles, higher blending targets may face structural limitations, making automotive readiness a critical pillar of the transition strategy.

Supporting Higher Ethanol Blends

To ensure compatibility with advanced ethanol blends such as E85 and above, AIDA stressed the importance of accelerating vehicle technology development and infrastructure readiness. Automakers and fuel suppliers must align to support these fuels, ensuring performance reliability and consumer acceptance. Establishing this ecosystem will be key to unlocking the full potential of ethanol as a mainstream transportation fuel.

Expanding Ethanol Use Beyond Transport

Beyond mobility applications, AIDA proposed extending ethanol usage into household and commercial cooking solutions. Ethanol-based burners could offer a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, particularly in semi-urban and rural regions. This diversification would not only reduce indoor air pollution but also create additional demand channels, strengthening the overall ethanol value chain.

Exploring Ethanol Blending in Diesel

The association also recommended evaluating the feasibility of blending ethanol with diesel. While technically more complex, such an approach could further broaden ethanol’s role in the energy mix. If successfully implemented, it could contribute to cost stabilization and reduce emissions across multiple transport segments.

Strategic Importance for Energy Security

AIDA underlined that a coordinated roadmap involving policy support, vehicle readiness, and infrastructure development is essential for achieving higher ethanol adoption. The association has requested an opportunity to present a detailed industry roadmap to the ministry, outlining actionable steps to strengthen energy security while advancing cleaner fuel alternatives. As global uncertainties persist, ethanol is increasingly being viewed as a viable pathway to balance economic stability with sustainability goals.
