Quick Takeaways
  • Chery introduces Rhino battery lineup with ultra-fast charging and up to 1500km range potential
  • Company commits major investment in solid-state batteries and aggressive carbon neutrality targets

In a strategic move to address persistent electric vehicle challenges, Chery Automobile Co Ltd unveiled its latest battery roadmap during a dedicated event in Wuhu, Anhui. The announcement focuses on solving key industry concerns such as charging speed, durability, and safety while aligning with long-term sustainability goals. The Chery Rhino battery solution strategy introduces a new generation of energy systems designed to significantly enhance performance across hybrid and electric vehicles.

Rhino Battery Portfolio and Performance Capabilities

The newly introduced Rhino battery family consists of three distinct variants tailored to different vehicle architectures. The Rhino H battery is designed for hybrid models, while the Rhino E battery supports fully electric vehicles. The most advanced offering, the Rhino S solid-state battery, is engineered to deliver a cell energy density of 400Wh/kg, with ongoing development targeting 600Wh/kg and driving ranges exceeding 1,500 kilometers.

One of the standout features is ultra-fast charging capability, enabling up to 500 kilometers of range in just eight minutes. Additionally, the battery system is designed for longevity, supporting up to 5,000 charge cycles, which significantly improves lifecycle efficiency and reduces long-term ownership costs.

Vehicle Integration and Product Deployment Plan

Chery has outlined a clear roadmap for integrating its battery systems across upcoming vehicle models. Several new and existing models will adopt different variants of the Rhino platform, demonstrating its scalability and adaptability across segments.

  • The QQ3 hatchback and Fulwin A9 sedan will feature a 70kWh Rhino E battery with 195Wh/kg density
  • The Fulwin T9L midsize SUV will utilize the Rhino H hybrid battery
  • The Sterra EX7 SUV will adopt a hybrid solid-liquid battery variant in Q4
  • The Sterra ES sedan will feature a liquid-based Rhino E enabling ultra-fast charging
  • The Sterra ES8 crossover will debut the advanced Rhino S solid-state battery

Investment in Solid-State Battery Development

To accelerate innovation, the company plans to significantly expand its research capabilities. Within the next two years, the dedicated solid-state battery team will grow to over 1,200 specialists. Total research and development investment is expected to exceed CNY 10 billion, with no predefined cap on future funding for next-generation battery technologies.

Focus on Long-Term Technology Leadership

This aggressive investment approach reflects a long-term commitment to achieving technological leadership in advanced energy storage systems. Solid-state batteries are expected to play a critical role in improving safety, energy density, and charging efficiency, positioning the company competitively in the evolving electric mobility landscape.

Carbon Neutrality and Infrastructure Expansion Targets

Alongside technological advancements, the company has set ambitious environmental goals. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle by more than 60% by 2030 compared to 2023 levels. Carbon neutrality for internal operations is targeted by 2037, with full value chain neutrality planned by 2047.

To support these objectives, the company plans to expand its green manufacturing footprint from seven to 25 zero-carbon plants by 2030. Additionally, it will deploy over 20,000 vehicle-to-grid charging stations by 2029, enabling better energy integration and grid stability while supporting large-scale electric vehicle adoption.

The comprehensive strategy reflects a dual focus on performance innovation and environmental responsibility, reinforcing the company’s position in the global transition toward sustainable mobility.
