Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has announced a significant manufacturing expansion aimed at strengthening its presence in the country’s two-wheeler market. As part of its long-term growth strategy, the company will enhance its production capabilities at the Tapukara facility in Rajasthan. This move reflects increasing demand in the 125–160 cc segment and aligns with broader industry momentum toward scaling domestic manufacturing capacity.

New Production Line at Tapukara Facility

The company plans to install a third production line at its second plant in Tapukara, adding an annual capacity of 670,000 units. This expansion will focus on scooters and light motorcycles within the 125–160 cc category, a segment witnessing steady growth in India. To support this development, Honda will acquire approximately 74,000 square meters of adjacent land and invest around INR 15 billion, reinforcing its long-term manufacturing commitment in the region.

Capacity Growth and Employment Impact

With the addition of the new production line, the Tapukara plant’s total production capacity will increase from a targeted 1.34 million units by FY 2026–27 to 2.01 million units annually. The expansion is also expected to generate around 2,000 new jobs, contributing to local economic development while strengthening operational efficiency. This capacity augmentation positions the facility as a key hub in Honda’s India manufacturing network.

Overall Production Expansion Strategy

Beyond Tapukara, the company intends to scale production across its other manufacturing plants in India. This broader strategy aims to increase overall annual production capacity from 6.25 million units currently to approximately 8 million units by 2028. The expansion underscores Honda’s confidence in sustained market demand and its focus on reinforcing supply capabilities across multiple locations.

Strategic Importance for Indian Market

The planned investments and capacity additions highlight the importance of India as a critical growth market for Honda. By expanding manufacturing infrastructure and improving output flexibility, the company aims to better serve evolving consumer demand while maintaining competitive positioning in the two-wheeler segment. This initiative also supports the broader goal of enhancing production scalability and operational resilience in the coming years.

Overall, the expansion reflects a forward-looking approach to capacity planning, enabling Honda to meet rising demand while strengthening its manufacturing footprint in India.
