- ZF Lifetec is expanding its Xi’an facility to significantly boost hybrid inflator production capacity.
- The project includes a new R&D center to accelerate next-generation automotive safety innovations.
ZF Lifetec has announced a major capacity expansion at its Xi’an manufacturing site, reinforcing its position in automotive safety systems. The ZF Lifetec Xi’an hybrid inflator expansion project reflects a strategic push to scale production while enhancing innovation capabilities. Established in 2010, the facility has been a key hub for developing and manufacturing hybrid inflators, which play a critical role in modern vehicle safety systems.
Expansion Scope and Investment Details
The project involves a total investment of EUR 150 million and includes the addition of approximately 3,636 square meters of new plant floor space. This expansion is designed to accommodate advanced production lines and supporting infrastructure required for next-generation inflator technologies. By increasing operational footprint and integrating modern manufacturing systems, the facility aims to achieve higher efficiency and improved output consistency across its product portfolio.
Production Capacity Enhancement
A key objective of the expansion is to significantly increase manufacturing capacity for hybrid inflators and related components. Upon full completion, the site will add annual production capacity of 4.1 million units for SHI2 and SHI3 inflators, along with 1.8 million hood lifters. Overall inflator output is expected to exceed 21 million units annually, positioning the facility as a high-volume production center within the global safety components supply chain.
Focus on Advanced Hybrid Inflator Technologies
The Xi’an site is prioritizing the development and deployment of SHI2 and SHI3 hybrid inflator production lines. These advanced inflators are engineered to meet evolving safety requirements in modern vehicles, offering improved deployment characteristics and reliability. By investing in specialized production systems and process optimization, the facility is set to support increasing demand for high-performance passive safety solutions in passenger vehicles.
Integration of Supporting Infrastructure
In addition to production lines, the expansion includes the installation of essential supporting facilities to ensure seamless manufacturing operations. This includes logistics systems, quality assurance setups, and integrated testing environments. Such infrastructure is crucial for maintaining high production standards and ensuring compliance with stringent automotive safety regulations.
R&D Center to Drive Innovation
A major highlight of the project is the establishment of a dedicated research and development center within the Xi’an site. This facility will feature comprehensive laboratories for material testing, structural strength validation, and prototype development. By consolidating testing and development capabilities, the company aims to accelerate innovation cycles and bring next-generation inflator technologies to market more efficiently.
Advancing Automotive Passive Safety
The new R&D capabilities will play a critical role in advancing passive safety systems by enabling rapid iteration and validation of new designs. With increasing regulatory and consumer focus on vehicle safety, continuous innovation in inflator technology is essential. The expanded facility is expected to support the evolution of safer and more efficient restraint systems, contributing to overall improvements in occupant protection across future vehicle platforms.
Through this expansion initiative, the Xi’an facility is set to become a central hub for both high-volume manufacturing and advanced safety technology development, strengthening its contribution to global automotive safety advancements.
