Quick Takeaways
  • Proton replaces mild-hybrid engine with turbocharged four-cylinder in X90 update
  • Reduced variants and pricing aim to improve affordability in Malaysia

In a strategic update aimed at improving affordability, Proton introduced the revised Proton X90 2026 updated SUV Malaysia on March 11, 2026. The refreshed SUV brings a simplified variant lineup, a reworked powertrain, and notable price reductions. This move reflects shifting market priorities in Malaysia, where cost-sensitive buyers are increasingly influencing product positioning in the mid-size SUV segment.

Revised Powertrain and Performance Changes

The updated model replaces the earlier 1.5-liter three-cylinder mild-hybrid system with a 1.5-liter i-GT turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While this transition simplifies the drivetrain, it results in slightly reduced output figures of 181 PS and 290 Nm. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering a fuel efficiency of approximately 6.9 L/100 km, maintaining competitive consumption levels for its class.

Chassis and Driving Features Retained

Despite the powertrain revision, the SUV retains key driving and comfort features. These include a rear multi-link suspension setup, selectable drive modes for varying conditions, and an electronic parking brake with auto hold functionality. These elements ensure that ride quality and usability remain consistent with previous versions.

Simplified Lineup and Seating Configuration

Proton has streamlined the X90 lineup by reducing variants from four to three: Lite, Prime, and Prime X. Customers can choose between seven-seat (2-3-2) and six-seat (2-2-2) configurations, catering to both family-oriented and premium seating preferences. This simplification helps improve manufacturing efficiency and reduces complexity in the product offering.

Exterior Updates and Pricing Strategy

Exterior modifications are minimal, with updates limited to standard 18-inch wheels across all variants and roof rails capable of supporting up to 75 kg. A more significant change comes in pricing, with reductions of up to MYR 30,000. The starting price is now MYR 99,800, inclusive of a MYR 7,000 rebate. To achieve this, selected features such as ADAS have been removed, aligning the product with affordability goals.

Market Performance Since Launch

Since its introduction in 2023, the X90 has achieved over 10,000 deliveries in Malaysia. The latest update is expected to further strengthen its position in the competitive SUV segment by targeting a broader customer base through cost optimization while maintaining essential performance and comfort features.
