Quick Takeaways
  • Lotus Eletre becomes the first China-built vehicle certified under the UN R171 driver assistance regulation.
  • Highway Navigation Pilot functionality will expand in Europe through OTA updates starting June 2026.

Lotus Technology Inc has secured a major regulatory milestone with the Lotus Technology UN R171 certification for its Eletre electric SUV. The certification was issued under UN Regulation No. 171 (UN R171.01), developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to standardize Level 2 Driver Control Assistance Systems worldwide. This achievement places the company among a small group of global automakers capable of meeting the newly established technical and safety requirements for advanced driver assistance technologies.

First China-Built Vehicle Approved Under UN R171

The Lotus Eletre received approval under the regulation due to its Highway Navigation Pilot (HNP) capability, which enables advanced driver assistance during highway driving scenarios. With this recognition, the Eletre becomes the first vehicle manufactured in China to comply with the UN R171 framework. The certification validates that the system meets international standards governing driver monitoring, operational safety boundaries, and system performance for Level 2 driver control assistance technologies deployed in modern passenger vehicles.

Expansion of HNP Features Through OTA Updates

The company plans to expand the HNP capability across European markets through over-the-air software updates scheduled to begin in June 2026. Alongside the highway driving system, Lotus is preparing to certify its broader intelligent assistance ecosystem known as LOTUS For Me, branded as Eletre X in Europe. This package integrates automated parking and advanced ADAS features, which are expected to pursue the same regulatory approval pathway as part of the company’s continued development of intelligent vehicle technologies.
