Tesla Expands Chip Manufacturing Vision
Musk previously suggested that the electric vehicle manufacturer might need to construct a massive semiconductor fabrication facility to meet future demand. At the company’s annual shareholder meeting last year, he explained that relying entirely on external suppliers may not provide enough production volume. Tesla has therefore been exploring ways to scale its chip manufacturing capacity while continuing to collaborate with major semiconductor partners.
Potential Industry Partnerships
Musk indicated that Tesla had considered possible cooperation with companies such as Intel, though no formal agreement has been signed. The company is already working with leading semiconductor manufacturers including Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung to produce its upcoming AI5 processor. The Tesla Terafab AI chip factory concept reflects Musk’s belief that achieving the required chip volume for future autonomous vehicles will likely require a dedicated large-scale fabrication facility.
