Mercedes-Benz VLE Electric MPV Debuts on VAN.EA Platform with 800V Architecture

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new premium multipurpose vehicle designed to deliver executive-level comfort, technology, and flexibility within a spacious cabin. The newly introduced Mercedes-Benz VLE electric MPV represents a major step in the automaker’s van strategy, combining luxury-car refinement with the practicality of a large passenger vehicle. The model replaces the outgoing V-Class and becomes the first production vehicle based on the company’s VAN.EA (Van Electric Architecture), a modular platform created to support the next generation of large passenger and commercial vans from the German manufacturer.

New VAN.EA Platform Launches with Electric Powertrains

The debut of the VLE marks the first production application of Mercedes-Benz’s VAN.EA platform, a scalable architecture engineered to support future electric vans and people carriers. Initial versions will feature fully electric powertrains operating on an advanced 800-volt electrical system designed to deliver improved efficiency and faster charging capability. Internal-combustion variants powered by gasoline and diesel engines are also scheduled to follow later in the year, providing broader market flexibility across different regions and customer needs.

According to Mercedes-Benz Vans chief Thomas Klein, the new MPV introduces a two-tier strategy for the company’s passenger van lineup. The VLE will serve as the core premium offering, while a more luxurious flagship model known as the VLS will sit above it. Expected to debut in the second half of 2026, the VLS is intended to deliver luxury levels comparable to the brand’s S-Class sedan and GLS SUV. In contrast, the VLE occupies a position similar to the E-Class and GLE in the company’s passenger car portfolio.

Luxury MPV Segment Gains Momentum

Global demand for upscale multipurpose vehicles has grown steadily, particularly in Asia where executive transport fleets increasingly rely on high-end MPVs. Markets such as China have seen strong adoption of premium people carriers for corporate mobility and chauffeur services. While the segment remains smaller in North America, Mercedes-Benz believes demand could expand among luxury shuttle operators, executive transport providers, and large families seeking a vehicle that combines interior space with premium comfort and technology.

The new model has been engineered to offer the ride quality and refinement typically associated with luxury sedans while maintaining the practicality expected from an MPV. Unlike the previous V-Class, the vehicle adopts distinct exterior styling and design language intended to clearly separate it from the next generation of Vito commercial vans, even though both models share the underlying VAN.EA architecture and certain drivetrain components.

Performance, Range and Charging Capabilities

Two electric variants will be available at launch. The single-motor front-wheel-drive VLE 300 produces 268 horsepower, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive VLE 400 delivers 409 horsepower. Both configurations are designed to balance performance with long-distance usability and towing capability. Mercedes-Benz rates the vehicle for trailer loads of up to 5,511 pounds, positioning it competitively within the premium MPV segment.

Charging and Efficiency Improvements

Energy is stored in a 115-kWh lithium-ion battery integrated within the vehicle’s flat-floor structure, contributing to improved cabin packaging and structural efficiency. The battery supports DC fast charging at rates of up to 315 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 25 minutes. Under favorable conditions, the system can add around 162 miles of driving range in roughly ten minutes. Mercedes-Benz reports drivetrain efficiency of up to 93% from battery to wheels, while a drag coefficient of 0.25 enhances aerodynamic performance for the large MPV class.

Dimensions and Interior Flexibility

For the European market, the VLE has been revealed in a single configuration measuring 209 inches in overall length and riding on a 131.6-inch wheelbase. The same long-wheelbase configuration is expected to be offered in North America. The design retains traditional MPV practicality with two front-hinged doors, sliding rear passenger doors, and a large vertical tailgate that opens to a low-height cargo area, making the vehicle suitable for executive transportation, family travel, and professional mobility services.

By combining a dedicated electric platform with luxury-focused design and spacious interior packaging, Mercedes-Benz is positioning the VLE as a premium alternative to large SUVs and sedans in markets where high-end passenger transport continues to evolve toward more versatile vehicle formats.
