- Nio’s Onvo brand is adding a LiDAR-equipped variant to the L60 SUV to enhance autonomous driving capabilities.
- The move reflects shifting product strategy as Onvo responds to market competition and consumer demand in China.
The Nio Onvo L60 LiDAR version is set to expand the sensor capabilities of the brand’s mid-size electric SUV, marking a notable adjustment in the sub-brand’s autonomous driving approach. A regulatory catalog released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed that Onvo will introduce a LiDAR-equipped configuration for the L60, a feature that was not previously offered on the model.
Strategic Shift in Onvo’s Autonomous Driving Sensor Approach
Onvo launched the L60 in September 2024 as its first production model, positioning the vehicle as a direct competitor to popular electric SUVs such as Tesla’s Model Y. Until now, the L60 had relied on other sensing technologies rather than LiDAR. Introducing this option indicates a strategic adjustment by the brand as it reassesses the role of LiDAR in supporting advanced driver assistance functions and safety systems across its product lineup.
Growing LiDAR Adoption Across the Chinese EV Market
Across the Chinese electric vehicle industry, LiDAR has become a widely adopted technology to improve environmental perception and autonomous driving capability. Most domestic EV manufacturers now equip their vehicles with LiDAR sensors, although some companies continue to pursue alternative strategies. Tesla remains committed to a pure vision-based approach, while Xpeng—once among the earliest LiDAR adopters—has also begun shifting toward vision-centric systems in recent product development.
Product Updates and Market Pressure on Onvo
The addition of LiDAR to the L60 follows a similar update planned for the larger Onvo L90 SUV, which regulatory filings earlier in the year showed would also receive a LiDAR-equipped version. According to Onvo leadership, the upgraded L90 is scheduled for launch in the second quarter and will likely carry a higher price point. The technology expansion reflects broader efforts by the brand to adapt product planning to Chinese consumer preferences while strengthening competitiveness in an increasingly crowded EV market.
Onvo has recently faced pressure to accelerate sales growth. Deliveries fell to 2,981 vehicles in February, the lowest monthly total since the brand began shipments in late September 2024. To stimulate demand, the company reintroduced the L60 Black Knight edition as a regular offering priced at 211,900 yuan for full-vehicle purchases. Additional promotional measures, including purchase tax subsidies of up to 10,262 yuan, have also been introduced to boost sales momentum in China’s highly competitive electric vehicle sector.
