Quick Takeaways
  • IM Motors will unveil its Ultra Agent platform dedicated to AI agents in the automotive industry.
  • AI-powered digital engineers are accelerating vehicle design, development, and engineering workflows.

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence across China’s technology ecosystem is beginning to reshape the automotive industry. One of the clearest signals of this shift is the development of IM Motors AI agents, which are designed to automate engineering tasks, accelerate product development, and transform traditional vehicle design workflows. As manufacturers increasingly integrate advanced AI tools into their engineering processes, these systems are expected to significantly enhance efficiency while enabling engineers to focus on higher-level innovation and strategic development.

IM Motors Prepares Dedicated AI Agent Launch

IM Motors announced that it will host a launch event on March 18 to introduce its “Ultra Agent,” marking one of the first events in China’s automotive sector focused specifically on AI agents. The company, established in November 2020 as a joint venture between SAIC, Zhangjiang Hi-Tech, and Alibaba, has positioned artificial intelligence as a core element of its technology roadmap. Built using Alibaba’s Qwen large language models, the IM Motors AI agents are designed to support a wide range of operational and engineering activities across the organization.

Digital Engineers Transform Automotive Development

The company has reportedly developed more than thirty specialized AI agents that each handle different responsibilities in daily operations. Some agents evaluate project feasibility and selection, while others manage requirement documentation, packaging, and supplier communications. When multiple agents collaborate efficiently, they function collectively as “digital engineers.” These digital engineers can independently execute complex tasks, allowing development teams to automate processes that previously required extensive manual coordination and engineering time.

Automated Design and Documentation

One practical example involves supplier documentation. Digital engineers can retrieve technical standards and regulatory information from internal databases and automatically generate the required documents. In engineering design workflows, developers can simply input parameters into design software, after which AI agents generate complete 3D component models within seconds. Previously, designing components such as hood reinforcement plates required several hours of work and numerous design iterations before reaching an optimal solution.

Challenges and the Role of Human Engineers

Despite these advancements, IM Motors emphasizes that AI systems are not intended to replace engineers. According to the company’s technology leadership, the greatest challenges in AI-driven development include limited data availability and the complexity of converting engineering knowledge into structured digital formats. By parameterizing and structuring expert knowledge from human engineers, the company has built a system where AI agents collaborate with humans, while people continue to guide direction, validate outputs, and oversee the broader development strategy.

As artificial intelligence capabilities continue to evolve, partnerships with technology leaders such as Alibaba are becoming increasingly influential in the automotive sector. Alibaba’s Qwen model family has gained industry attention for delivering high performance even on lightweight devices, reinforcing the growing intersection between AI development and next-generation vehicle engineering platforms. With initiatives like these, AI-driven digital engineering is emerging as a powerful tool shaping the future of automotive innovation.
