India Automobile Production and Sales Performance
India’s automotive sector produced 28,64,612 vehicles in February 2026, compared with 23,46,258 units in February 2025. Domestic sales reached 23,01,355 units during the month, up from 17,73,650 units in the previous year. Export performance also improved significantly, with shipments rising to 6,08,284 units compared with 4,74,328 units a year earlier. Looking at the broader fiscal year performance, cumulative production between April and February of the 2025–26 financial year reached 3,03,51,351 units. This represents an increase from 2,73,73,519 units recorded during the same period of the previous fiscal year. Domestic sales for the period rose to 2,45,51,735 units, while exports expanded sharply to 60,03,994 units, marking approximately 25 percent growth compared with the previous year.
Two-Wheelers Dominate Overall Industry Volumes
Two-wheelers continued to represent the largest share of India’s automotive production, reinforcing their critical role in the country’s mobility ecosystem. In February 2026, production in the segment reached 23,11,594 units, significantly higher than the 18,58,462 units produced in the same month of the previous year. Domestic demand remained robust, with sales climbing to 18,71,406 units compared with 13,84,605 units recorded in February 2025.
Motorcycles and Scooters Drive Segment Expansion
Within the two-wheeler category, motorcycles accounted for the majority of production volumes, reaching 14,75,389 units in February 2026. Scooter production followed at 7,89,841 units during the same period. Major manufacturers contributing to these volumes included TVS Motor Company, Hero MotoCorp, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, and Bajaj Auto. Export activity also strengthened, with motorcycle shipments increasing to 4,22,239 units compared with 3,45,722 units a year earlier.
Passenger Vehicles and Three-Wheelers Show Mixed Trends
Passenger vehicle production reached 4,43,608 units in February 2026, compared with 4,04,193 units during the same month in 2025. Utility vehicles remained the dominant sub-segment within passenger vehicles, with production rising to 2,83,391 units from 2,45,508 units a year earlier. Among manufacturers, Maruti Suzuki India recorded the highest utility vehicle production with 1,02,834 units, followed by Mahindra and Mahindra at 57,968 units and Hyundai Motor India at 34,961 units.
Three-Wheeler Production and Export Growth
Three-wheelers also recorded strong growth in February 2026, with total production rising to 1,08,154 units compared with 83,252 units in the previous year. Passenger carriers formed the largest share of the segment, accounting for 92,514 units. Bajaj Auto led production with 56,500 units, followed by TVS Motor Company with 20,168 units. Exports of three-wheelers increased to 38,766 units during the month, while fiscal year exports reached 4,22,381 units compared with 2,78,006 units a year earlier.
In contrast, Tata Motors reported a decline in cumulative passenger vehicle volumes for the April–February period of the 2025–26 fiscal year. Production across passenger cars, utility vehicles, and vans fell to approximately 4,17,060 units compared with 4,51,413 units in the previous year. Domestic sales and exports also declined during the period, indicating a contrasting performance trend compared with the broader industry growth.
