- India recorded its highest-ever February vehicle sales across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers in 2026.
- Two-wheelers and scooters led the growth surge, driving strong domestic demand and export expansion.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers reported exceptional industry momentum in February 2026, with India’s automotive sector achieving record-breaking sales across major vehicle segments. According to SIAM data released on March 13, 2026, passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers all recorded their highest February sales in history. Strong domestic demand, expanding production capacity, and rising exports contributed to the remarkable performance, signaling continued resilience for the Indian automobile market.
Record Domestic Vehicle Sales Across Segments
Domestic demand remained the strongest driver of industry growth during the month. Total domestic vehicle sales reached 23,01,355 units, representing a substantial 29.8 percent increase compared with February 2025. Passenger vehicles recorded sales of 4,17,705 units, reflecting a 10.6 percent rise year over year. Utility vehicles continued to dominate the segment with 13.5 percent growth to 2,36,957 units, while passenger cars declined slightly by 3.8 percent to 1,06,799 units. Vans maintained stability with a marginal increase of 1.1 percent, reaching 11,620 units.
Two-Wheelers Drive Mass-Market Demand
Two-wheelers remained the backbone of India’s mobility ecosystem, posting the most significant increase in domestic sales. The segment expanded by 35.2 percent to reach 18,71,406 units. Scooters led the expansion with a sharp 42.3 percent surge, totaling 7,29,774 units and reflecting rising urban mobility demand. Motorcycles also recorded strong growth of 30.8 percent to 10,96,537 units, while mopeds increased by 34.3 percent to reach 45,095 units, indicating widespread consumer adoption across multiple mobility segments.
Three-Wheelers Maintain Strong Momentum
Three-wheelers also demonstrated robust performance in domestic markets. Sales increased 29 percent year over year to 74,573 units. Passenger carrier three-wheelers rose significantly by 30.1 percent to reach 60,013 units, while goods carrier models expanded by 25.2 percent to 13,271 units. This growth reflects increasing demand for last-mile mobility and logistics solutions in both urban and semi-urban areas.
Production Growth Reflects Industry Expansion
Manufacturing output mirrored the strong demand environment, with total vehicle production reaching 28,64,612 units during February 2026. This represented a 22.1 percent increase compared with the same month in the previous year. The surge in manufacturing activity highlights the automotive sector’s ability to scale production while responding to domestic consumption growth and export opportunities.
Two-Wheeler Manufacturing Leads Output
Two-wheeler production accounted for the majority of manufacturing volume, reaching 23,11,594 units and rising 24.4 percent year on year. Within this category, scooter production recorded the fastest growth rate, increasing 30.4 percent to 7,89,841 units. Motorcycle production also rose significantly by 22.1 percent to reach 14,75,389 units, demonstrating strong demand across commuter and performance-oriented segments.
Passenger Vehicle Production Expands Steadily
Passenger vehicle manufacturing increased by 9.8 percent to 4,43,608 units during the month. Utility vehicles remained the key contributor within this category, expanding production by 15.4 percent to reach 2,83,391 units. Passenger car production rose modestly by 0.7 percent to 1,47,277 units, while van production grew 4.2 percent to 12,940 units, reflecting stable demand within niche transport categories.
Export Performance Strengthens Global Position
India’s vehicle export performance also delivered strong results in February 2026. Total exports reached 6,08,284 units, representing a 28.2 percent increase compared with the previous year. Export expansion across multiple vehicle segments demonstrates the growing competitiveness of Indian automotive manufacturing in global markets and the increasing role of India as a production hub.

Industry Outlook and Emerging Concerns
Rajesh Menon, Director General of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, highlighted that positive industry sentiment continues to support growth across vehicle categories. He noted that the February performance represents record territory for the sector. However, potential risks remain, particularly geopolitical tensions in West Asia that could disrupt supply chains or impact export markets. The industry is expected to closely monitor global developments while maintaining momentum driven by domestic demand and upcoming festive-season purchases.
The February 2026 performance demonstrates the continued strength of the Indian automotive ecosystem, supported by expanding consumer demand, resilient manufacturing capacity, and increasing export competitiveness across vehicle categories.
