Quick Takeaways
  • Two U.S. companies announced a USD 500 million investment to deploy EV charging and electric buses in central Mexico.
  • The project will begin in Querétaro and expand to major industrial regions including Mexico City and Puebla.

A major electrification initiative is emerging in central Mexico as the Invisible Urban Charging Inc. and ATX Smart Mobility electric bus charging Mexico program moves forward with a significant infrastructure investment. Announced on March 6, the USD 500 million project targets the expansion of electric public transport through large-scale charging infrastructure and fleet electrification. The development is designed to accelerate the transition toward cleaner urban mobility while addressing a growing shortage of charging capacity across key industrial regions.

Electric Bus Charging Network Planned for the Bajío Region

The initiative will deploy 38 charging stations alongside a fleet of 140 electric buses serving the Bajío region, with Querétaro selected as the primary launch hub. The region was chosen due to its strong industrial activity and strategic logistics importance. Following the initial rollout, the charging and fleet infrastructure will gradually expand toward Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Puebla, enabling broader electrified public transport coverage across densely populated and economically active urban corridors.

Project execution will involve multiple specialized partners. CBRE Group Inc. will identify optimal locations for the charging centers and manage installation and maintenance services. Meanwhile, Invisible Urban Charging Inc. will finance hardware deployment, provide the digital platform supporting the charging network, and collect recurring usage fees for each charger. ATX Smart Mobility will contribute artificial intelligence technology designed to optimize bus routing and energy consumption, helping maximize operational efficiency across the electrified fleet.

The large-scale investment aims to address Mexico’s existing charging infrastructure gap while supporting the rapid expansion of electromobility in the country. By combining fleet electrification, charging deployment, and AI-driven optimization, the project positions central Mexico as an emerging hub for electric public transport systems. As urban mobility demand grows and sustainability policies intensify, the initiative could become a foundational model for future EV infrastructure expansion throughout the region.
