Data released by the China Passenger Car Association shows a strong rebound in Tesla China EV sales during February, highlighting the company’s resilience in a contracting electric vehicle market. Retail deliveries reached 38,206 vehicles for the month, representing a 42.68% increase compared with the same period last year and more than doubling January volumes. The rebound helped the American electric vehicle manufacturer regain market momentum in the world’s largest EV market.
Market Share Rises Despite Weak Chinese EV Demand
According to industry data, Tesla’s presence in China’s battery electric vehicle market expanded significantly during the month. Its share of the BEV segment climbed to 13.74%, while its share of the broader new energy vehicle category rose to 8.23%, marking the highest levels recorded since April 2024. The improvement came even as the wider market weakened considerably, with national BEV retail sales falling 34.9% year-on-year to 278,000 units and overall NEV sales dropping 32% to 464,000 units.

Model Y Leads Sales Recovery While Exports Decline
Domestic demand offsets competitive pressure
The company’s recovery was largely driven by strong demand for the Model Y sport utility vehicle, which recorded a wholesale volume of 41,404 units and became the top-selling passenger vehicle at wholesale in China for the month. Competition in the domestic EV market remains intense, particularly from emerging Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi. Meanwhile, exports from the Tesla Shanghai plant slowed sharply to 20,393 vehicles in February, down nearly 60% from January, bringing the company’s total wholesale volume in China to 58,599 units for the month.
