- Ashok Leyland begins construction of a new EV battery pack manufacturing facility near Chennai.
- The investment strengthens EV supply chains and supports electric commercial vehicle production in India.
Ashok Leyland has initiated construction of a new electric vehicle battery pack production site in Tamil Nadu, marking another step in the company’s broader electrification strategy. The greenfield facility is being developed at Pillaipakkam near Chennai and represents a key component of the Hinduja Group’s previously announced investments in electric mobility and battery technology within the state’s growing EV ecosystem.
Investment to Strengthen Local EV Battery Manufacturing
The project involves an investment of approximately INR 4–5 billion and is intended to localise the production of EV battery packs for commercial vehicles in India. By building battery pack manufacturing capabilities domestically, the Ashok Leyland EV battery pack manufacturing facility is expected to reinforce the electric mobility supply chain while helping reduce dependency on imported components and improving supply security for future EV production.
Supporting Electric Commercial Vehicle Expansion
The upcoming facility will support both Ashok Leyland and Switch Mobility’s electric commercial vehicle portfolios by enabling development and production of advanced battery pack solutions within India. The company stated that the project will also generate employment opportunities while enhancing advanced manufacturing skills in the region, further strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a major automotive and EV manufacturing hub.
The new battery pack plant also adds to the Hinduja Group’s long-standing manufacturing presence in Tamil Nadu, where cumulative investments have already exceeded INR 90 billion, reflecting continued commitment to expanding electric mobility capabilities and supporting the transition toward cleaner commercial transportation.
