Quick Takeaways
  • Zoox is expanding robotaxi testing operations to Phoenix and Dallas with new depots and facilities.
  • A new Fusion Center in Scottsdale will support real-time fleet coordination and mission control.

Autonomous mobility developer Zoox is accelerating its deployment strategy with a new phase of the Zoox robotaxi expansion, announcing the launch of robotaxi operations in Arizona and expanded testing in Texas. The company confirmed that Phoenix will become its first operational hub in Arizona while Dallas will serve as the next major testing environment. To support this rollout, Zoox plans to establish new vehicle depots in both cities alongside an advanced operations facility in Scottsdale designed to manage fleet activity.

New Testing Environments to Strengthen Autonomous Performance

The Zoox robotaxi expansion into Phoenix and Dallas allows the company to validate its autonomous driving technology under significantly varied environmental conditions. Phoenix offers a testing environment characterized by extreme heat and dust, conditions that are particularly important for evaluating sensor durability and battery performance. Dallas, on the other hand, introduces a different challenge with changing weather patterns and a complex road network that will help refine artificial intelligence systems responsible for perception, navigation, and decision-making in urban traffic scenarios.

Operational Deployment Strategy and Fleet Infrastructure

As part of its standard deployment process, Zoox will initially introduce a small fleet of retrofitted SUVs equipped with autonomous systems while maintaining a safety driver behind the wheel. These vehicles will focus on manual mapping operations in central neighborhoods of Dallas and Phoenix before progressing to fully autonomous testing. After mapping is complete, the company plans to deploy its purpose-built robotaxis featuring carriage-style seating designed to encourage passenger interaction and improve the shared ride experience.

Fusion Center Supports Fleet Operations

The company is also establishing a third Fusion Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, expanding its operational infrastructure beyond existing facilities in Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area. These command centers serve as the operational backbone for the autonomous fleet, enabling real-time coordination between teleguidance teams, mission control systems, and rider support staff. With Phoenix and Dallas added to its network, Zoox will now operate testing fleets across ten major U.S. markets including Seattle, Austin, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Washington D.C., strengthening its nationwide autonomous mobility development program.
