Quick Takeaways
  • Spark Minda and Turntide formed a joint venture to manufacture advanced EV and hybrid powertrain components in India.
  • The partnership focuses on localising motor controllers, axial-flux motors, and thermal management pumps for the Indian EV market.

The Minda Turntide EV powertrain joint venture was announced on March 9 as Minda Corporation confirmed that its wholly owned subsidiary Spark Minda Green Mobility Systems Private Limited has entered a strategic partnership with Turntide Drives Limited of the United Kingdom. The collaboration will establish a new India-incorporated entity focused on developing and manufacturing next-generation electric powertrain technologies tailored for the country’s rapidly expanding EV market.

Advanced EV Powertrain Technologies Planned

The joint venture will manufacture a portfolio of high-performance electrified drivetrain components designed for both electric and hybrid vehicles. The planned product range includes high- and low-voltage motor controllers, axial-flux and high-voltage electric motors, thermal management pumps, and specialised electronic controllers designed for multiple vehicle applications.

Focus on Localised Manufacturing

The companies aim to localise production of premium electrified propulsion systems in India. By combining engineering expertise with locally developed manufacturing capability, the venture intends to support domestic EV ecosystem growth while strengthening supply chains for advanced electric powertrain solutions.

Ownership Structure and Technology Licensing

The new entity will operate with Spark Minda Green Mobility Systems holding 49 percent equity and Turntide retaining a 51 percent majority stake. Under the agreement, neither partner can transfer or encumber its shares for a three-year period, ensuring long-term stability during the initial growth phase.

The board will consist of five directors, with two nominated by Minda’s subsidiary and three appointed by Turntide. The British technology company will also provide proprietary technologies and technical know-how to the venture under agreed licensing terms. Through the Minda Turntide EV powertrain joint venture, both companies aim to accelerate the localisation of advanced EV and hybrid propulsion systems for the Indian automotive industry.
