Quick Takeaways
  • New UWB SoCs deliver extended ranging capability and improved robustness for automotive and industrial applications.
  • Enhanced radar and positioning capabilities support digital key access and vehicle localization use cases.

The STMicroelectronics ST64UWB chip family was introduced on March 10, bringing a new generation of ultra-wideband wireless solutions designed for automotive, consumer, and industrial environments. The new devices combine extended communication range with stronger processing capability and improved signal robustness, enabling more reliable positioning and secure connectivity applications. These capabilities allow manufacturers to support advanced vehicle access systems, precise location tracking, and enhanced sensing functions across multiple mobility and electronics platforms.

UWB technology enhancements for extended range

The chip family is built on the IEEE 802.15.4z ultra-wideband wireless standard, which provides secure and highly accurate distance measurement capabilities. New technical improvements such as multi-millisecond ranging (MMS) and narrowband assistance (NBA) significantly expand the achievable operating range. These enhancements allow devices to maintain reliable communication in complex environments where signal interference and multipath reflections typically limit conventional wireless technologies.

New SoC architecture for automotive applications

The product lineup includes three system-on-chip devices: ST64UWB-A100, ST64UWB-A500, and ST64UWB-C100. All devices are manufactured using an advanced 18 nm FD-SOI process, improving energy efficiency and processing performance. The ST64UWB-A series is specifically optimized for vehicle integration, supporting applications such as digital key systems and precise vehicle localization.

Processing performance and safety support

The ST64UWB-A100 integrates an Arm Cortex-M85 core to provide enhanced computing capability for secure ranging and positioning algorithms. The design also supports the ASIL A(B) automotive safety concept, aligning with functional safety expectations in modern vehicle electronics. With these capabilities, the STMicroelectronics ST64UWB chip family enables next-generation wireless features for connected vehicles, secure access systems, and emerging sensing applications.
