- MG begins local CKD assembly of its electric SUV in Malaysia to strengthen EV localization.
- The rear-wheel-drive model features a 62 kWh battery, 446 km WLTP range, and advanced driver assistance systems.
The SAIC Motor Malaysia MG S5 EV has entered local production as the first completely knocked down (CKD) electric vehicle assembled by the company in Malaysia. The initial unit was produced at EPMB’s Plant 2 facility in Pegoh, Melaka, marking an important milestone for domestic EV manufacturing and supply chain development. The program aligns with the company’s localization strategy and aims to support broader electric mobility adoption in the region.
Monthly production is expected to range between 120 and 180 units, translating to approximately 1,500–2,000 vehicles annually in 2026. Beyond domestic sales, the assembly program could also support exports to other ASEAN markets as regional EV demand grows.
Production Strategy and Localization
SAIC Motor initiated local assembly to strengthen its manufacturing footprint in Southeast Asia while improving supply chain resilience and cost efficiency. Establishing CKD operations in Malaysia allows the brand to localize components and gradually expand the regional EV ecosystem.
The model’s local production also contributes to the development of Malaysia’s EV manufacturing capabilities, positioning the country as a potential regional hub for electric vehicle assembly and distribution.
Electric Powertrain and Charging Capability
The electric SUV is equipped with a rear-wheel-drive configuration producing 202 hp and 350 Nm of torque, representing a performance improvement of 34 hp and 100 Nm compared with the previously imported version.
Battery and Fast Charging
A 62 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by CATL powers the vehicle. The system supports up to 150 kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10–80 percent charge in approximately 26 minutes. The vehicle offers a WLTP driving range of up to 446 km, making it suitable for both urban and intercity use.
Features, Safety, and Market Positioning
The CKD model is currently offered in the Lux variant, equipped with premium features including ventilated and powered front seats, a hands-free power tailgate, and MG’s ADAS 2.5 driver assistance suite. These technologies enhance driver convenience and vehicle safety.
The electric SUV has also achieved five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP. Final pricing and detailed specifications are expected to be confirmed closer to the official market launch.
