Quick Takeaways
  • LG Chem introduced Super Flame Barrier and Nexula technologies to delay and block thermal runaway propagation.
  • The company showcased a full portfolio of advanced battery materials and adhesive solutions.

LG Chem will present its latest LG Chem battery fire safety solutions at InterBattery 2026, scheduled in Seoul Special City from March 11 to 13, 2026. The company plans to highlight integrated materials and engineering technologies designed to reduce battery fire risks and improve thermal management in advanced battery systems.

Super Flame Barrier Technology for Thermal Runaway Delay

One of the key innovations on display is Super Flame Barrier (SFB), an engineering plastic designed to delay thermal runaway events in battery packs. When exposed to flames, the material forms a hard and dense protective barrier that slows flame spread and limits pressure buildup inside battery systems.

The technology received the InterBattery Award in the Reliability, Safety, and Sustainability category, highlighting its role in improving next-generation battery safety.

Nexula Aerogel Thermal Barrier Material

Another major highlight is Nexula, an aerogel-based thermal barrier designed to prevent heat diffusion across battery components. The material helps isolate temperature spikes between battery cells, modules, and packs, reducing the likelihood of chain reactions during overheating events.

By combining Nexula with SFB technology, LG Chem battery fire safety solutions create a dual-layer protection system that both delays thermal runaway and blocks heat propagation within battery assemblies.

Adhesive Solutions for Battery Pack Stability

The company will also present several specialized adhesive materials that improve battery pack reliability and performance. These include thermally conductive adhesives that rapidly dissipate heat while firmly securing battery cells.

  • Thermally conductive adhesives for efficient heat dissipation
  • Structural adhesives for bonding dissimilar materials
  • Potting agents that protect batteries from environmental exposure

Comprehensive Battery Materials Portfolio

In addition to safety materials, the exhibition will feature the company’s full battery materials portfolio covering the battery value chain. This includes cathode materials such as high-nickel, high-voltage middle-nickel, lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP), and lithium manganese-rich (LMR), along with carbon nanotubes and anode binders used in advanced lithium-ion battery systems.

Through these innovations, the company aims to strengthen battery safety, thermal stability, and long-term performance in next-generation electrified mobility applications.
