Quick Takeaways
  • EV sales in Japan jumped 77.4% year-on-year in February 2026 driven by new model launches and subsidy changes.
  • Hybrid vehicle sales declined sharply, while EV market share in passenger cars continued to rise.

Toyota, Honda, and other domestic automakers are helping accelerate Japan electric vehicle sales February 2026 as the country recorded strong growth in EV demand. New passenger EV registrations, including mini vehicles and standard registered vehicles, reached 7,790 units during the month, representing a 77.4% year-on-year increase and marking the sixth consecutive month of expansion in the EV segment.

EV Market Growth Despite Passenger Car Slowdown

While the broader passenger car market in Japan declined by 7.3% year-on-year, electric vehicles continued gaining traction. The momentum was largely supported by new EV models introduced by Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Co., Ltd., which stimulated demand in the electrified mobility space.

Government policy also played a role in supporting market growth. In January 2026, Japanese authorities revised clean energy vehicle (CEV) subsidy rules and raised the maximum subsidy available for EV purchases, encouraging consumers to shift toward fully electric vehicles.

Hybrid Sales Decline Weighs on Electrified Vehicle Market

Despite strong EV growth, total electrified vehicle sales in Japan, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, declined 9.5% year-on-year to 178,693 units. Hybrid vehicles, which represent about 90% of the electrified vehicle segment, fell 11.9% to 167,540 units, causing the overall decline in electrified vehicle registrations.

Rising EV Market Share

Even with the broader electrified market contraction, the share of EVs in total passenger car sales increased by 1.1 percentage points year-on-year to reach 2.4%. This reflects a gradual but steady shift toward fully electric mobility in the Japanese automotive market.

Upcoming Launches Expected to Lift EV Volumes

Additional growth could emerge in the coming months as new EV models from Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Suzuki Motor Corporation begin full market registrations from March 2026 onward. These launches are expected to further strengthen the trajectory of Japan electric vehicle sales February 2026 momentum and support continued expansion of the EV segment.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles also recorded growth, with sales rising 11.5% year-on-year to 3,334 units. The increased ceiling for CEV subsidies likely contributed to this improvement as buyers explored electrified options that combine electric driving with conventional powertrains.
