On March 6, 2026, Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) welcomed a delegation from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), led by Takuya Fukuoka of Isuzu Motors, together with representatives from several Japanese vehicle manufacturers. The meeting focused on improving Thailand’s product design examination framework and aligning it more closely with global industry practices.
Strengthening Patent Examination Capabilities
As part of the visit, specialists from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association conducted a technical workshop for Thai patent examiners. The session presented international case studies and emerging technology developments from the global automotive industry.
The objective was to help local examiners refine their assessment methods for product design applications, ensuring that patent review standards match the complexity of modern vehicle technologies and evolving component designs.
Fast-Track Design Patent Program for Automotive Parts
The Department of Intellectual Property highlighted a dedicated policy initiative designed to accelerate design protection for the automotive industry. Through the Target Design Patent Fast-Track program, design applications for vehicle components can receive a final examination decision within approximately three months.
This faster process is intended to encourage innovation among manufacturers and suppliers operating in Thailand’s automotive ecosystem, while also strengthening confidence among global automakers investing in local production.
Automotive Sector’s Economic Importance
Officials noted that the automotive industry remains one of Thailand’s most significant industrial pillars, contributing roughly nine percent of the country’s gross domestic product. With numerous global vehicle manufacturers operating assembly and production facilities in the country, intellectual property protection plays a key role in maintaining technological competitiveness.
Focus on Partial Design Protection
During discussions, JAMA representatives emphasized the growing importance of safeguarding partial product designs. In modern vehicles, individual elements such as bumpers, lighting modules, or grille structures often carry unique visual signatures and engineering complexity.
Protecting these specific design elements has become increasingly important for manufacturers seeking to preserve brand identity and prevent unauthorized replication of distinctive vehicle features.
Proposed Patent Law Updates
Thailand is currently considering updates to its patent legislation to better reflect international intellectual property frameworks. A draft revision to the country’s Patent Act introduces provisions for partial design protection, allowing individual components or sections of products to be protected independently.
The proposed reform also extends design patent protection duration from ten years to fifteen years, bringing Thailand’s framework closer to the standards established under the Hague Agreement for international design registration.
By combining faster examination timelines with updated legal protections, Thailand aims to reinforce its position as a major automotive manufacturing hub while supporting continuous design innovation across the global vehicle industry.
