- NIO plans a new battery research center in Shanghai’s Jiading District to develop next-generation power batteries.
- The project aims to strengthen the regional new energy vehicle supply chain and technology ecosystem.
The NIO automotive battery R&D site will be established in Shanghai’s Jiading District following a cooperation agreement signed on March 4 between Anting Town authorities and NIO. The project is designed to accelerate research and development of next-generation power battery technologies and support the expansion of the local new energy vehicle industry ecosystem.
Strategic Battery Research Expansion in Jiading
The planned facility will focus on advanced power battery innovation, enabling deeper technological capabilities for electric vehicle energy systems. By strengthening research capacity, the project aims to enhance industrial deployment and reinforce critical battery technology development within Anting Town’s growing new energy vehicle cluster.
Strengthening Local Industry Collaboration
The research initiative is expected to create stronger technological collaboration between regional companies involved in battery materials, electric drive systems, and charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. Such integration will help accelerate innovation across the supply chain.
Supporting the Regional NEV Technology Ecosystem
By linking research activities with upstream and downstream suppliers, the project is expected to encourage further industry clustering in Jiading. This coordinated development approach is intended to improve technological autonomy while reinforcing Shanghai’s position as a major hub for electric mobility innovation.
