Quick Takeaways
  • CARIAD developed an automated steering assist system that helps avoid imminent collisions when drivers fail to react.
  • The system uses radar and camera data processed every 20 milliseconds to model surroundings and guide safe maneuvers.

On March 4, CARIAD introduced CARIAD Evasive Steering Assist, a safety technology designed to help drivers avoid imminent collisions when reaction time is insufficient. The system activates automatically when sensors detect that a crash is likely and the driver has not responded in time. By guiding the vehicle through a controlled evasive maneuver, the technology supports the driver while prioritizing the safety of surrounding road users.

Real-Time Environmental Analysis for Safer Maneuvers

The system continuously analyzes the vehicle’s environment using multiple sensors. Data from the front camera, front radar, and two front corner radars is processed to build an accurate representation of the surroundings.

High-Speed Data Processing

Every 20 milliseconds, the vehicle generates a detailed model of nearby traffic conditions. This rapid analysis allows the software to detect obstacles, calculate possible avoidance paths, and determine whether a steering maneuver can safely prevent a collision.

Lane-Based Safety Control

A key requirement of the system is maintaining compliance with road regulations. The technology evaluates lane markings and ensures that the vehicle remains within its lane during the evasive maneuver. This constraint differentiates the system from conventional driver-assistance technologies that may allow the vehicle to cross the center line during emergency steering.

Extensive Testing and Vehicle Integration

To ensure reliability, the development team carried out extensive testing programs that included engineering validation, real-world driving trials in multiple countries, and evaluations with professional test drivers. The CARIAD Evasive Steering Assist technology is currently available in several Audi models, including the A5, Q5, A6, A6 e-tron, and Q6 e-tron, bringing advanced automated safety capabilities to modern passenger vehicles.
