Quick Takeaways
  • Cornwall Council grants planning approval for lithium brine exploration near Redruth.
  • Project phases include deep borehole drilling and a potential demonstration extraction facility.

Planning Approval Granted for Lithium Development

The Cornish Lithium Copper House Lithium Project has received planning approval from Cornwall Council’s Mineral Planning Authority to proceed with exploration activities at Burncoose near Redruth. The project, led by Cornish Lithium, aims to explore and extract lithium from geothermal brine resources located deep beneath the site.

Phase One Exploration Activities

The first development phase focuses on preparing the site and drilling two exploration boreholes to depths of roughly 2,000 metres. These wells will be used to test lithium-rich brine resources and evaluate the feasibility of commercial extraction operations in the region.

Further Drilling if Results Are Positive

If early exploration proves successful, planning consent also allows a second phase involving additional site preparation and further drilling activities. These steps would help confirm the scale and viability of lithium resources beneath the area.

Potential Demonstration Extraction Facility

The final approved phase includes the possible installation and operation of a demonstration-scale lithium extraction processing facility. The Cornish Lithium Copper House Lithium Project will also evaluate whether geothermal heat produced as a by-product could support local housing and future commercial operations.
