Quick Takeaways
  • Nio reported more than 200 million kilometers of assisted driving in February after a major software update.
  • User adoption of autonomous driving features increased sharply following the Nio World Model rollout.

The Nio smart driving system recorded a major milestone as usage surpassed 200 million kilometers of assisted driving in February, marking the first time the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer reached this level within a single month. The surge came shortly after a major software update introducing the Nio World Model (NWM), which significantly improved automated driving capabilities and user experience.

The company reported that the milestone represented an 81.5 percent increase in assisted driving mileage compared with January, highlighting strong adoption of the updated technology among vehicle owners.

Rapid Adoption Following Software Update

The surge in usage was driven by the rollout of the Nio World Model software to more than 460,000 vehicles equipped with the Banyan platform and four Nvidia Orin X processors. The update was initially deployed in late January and later extended to newer models powered by the company's internally developed Shenji NX9031 autonomous driving chip.

According to Nio, the software aims to deliver a more human-like driving experience while improving the performance of advanced driver assistance capabilities.

Urban Autopilot Usage Growth

The urban navigate-on-autopilot feature experienced strong adoption after the update. Total mileage driven using this function increased by 76.7 percent compared with the previous month, while total driving time rose by 81.7 percent.

The number of users who relied on assisted driving for more than half of their total driving time increased by 210.6 percent in February, indicating growing confidence in the automated system.

Holiday Travel Boosts Assisted Driving Activity

Travel demand during China's Spring Festival holiday also contributed to the surge in automated driving usage. Between February 15 and February 23, long-distance travel significantly increased the activation of assisted driving features.

Beginning February 18, daily assisted driving mileage exceeded 10 million kilometers for six consecutive days. During the holiday period, usage of urban piloted driving rose by 344.7 percent compared with the same festival period in the previous year.

Advancements in AI Training and Autonomous Development

The company stated that the updated system represents the first deployment in China of complete closed-loop reinforcement learning within smart driving research and development. This approach enables the software to continuously improve its decision-making capabilities through real-world driving data.

Engineers are already working on the next generation of autonomous driving software while the company plans to expand cloud-based training computing capacity beginning in 2026 to accelerate further development.
