Quick Takeaways
  • Michigan Court of Appeals ruling allows construction and production to proceed at Ford’s new battery plant in Marshall.
  • The USD 3 billion facility will manufacture LFP battery cells for future electric pickup trucks and energy storage systems.

The Ford BlueOval Battery Park Michigan project received a major legal boost after the Michigan Court of Appeals upheld a lower court decision rejecting a citizen group’s challenge to the rezoning of land in Marshall. The ruling removes a key legal hurdle and allows the large-scale EV battery facility to move toward full completion and production later this year.

Major EV Battery Facility Moves Toward Production

The USD 3 billion manufacturing complex is designed to produce lithium iron phosphate prismatic battery cells using licensed technology from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL). Construction of the mile-long facility has progressed steadily despite political and legal opposition over the past two years.

Production at the plant is scheduled to begin during the summer, positioning the facility as an important part of the company’s expanding electric vehicle supply chain in the United States.

Battery Supply for Future Electric Pickup

Cells manufactured at the Marshall plant will power an upcoming midsize electric pickup truck built on a new Universal EV Platform. The vehicle is expected to enter production at Louisville Assembly in Kentucky in 2027.

The use of LFP chemistry is expected to support cost efficiency and durability while helping expand the availability of affordable electric trucks in North America.

Expansion Into Energy Storage

Beyond vehicle applications, the facility will also produce smaller amp-hour battery cells for residential energy storage products under the company’s Ford Energy business unit. This strategy reflects a broader push to integrate electric vehicles with home energy management and storage systems.

Regional Economic Impact

The Marshall manufacturing site is expected to employ approximately 1,700 workers once fully operational. Local officials believe the project will drive economic development in the region despite the earlier legal challenges surrounding land rezoning.

Plans for the Ford BlueOval Battery Park Michigan facility were originally announced in February 2023 as part of the automaker’s broader electrification strategy.
