- Fraunhofer introduces Audiofields to deliver immersive 3D sound in Mercedes-Benz vehicles with MBUX.
- The technology expands stereo audio into a vehicle-wide spatial soundscape.
On February 27, the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT revealed that Fraunhofer Audiofields 3D audio technology is now delivering an immersive spatial sound experience in Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system. The system enhances how drivers and passengers perceive music and audio inside the vehicle.
Launch Across Mercedes-Benz Model Range
The technology rollout begins with several premium models, including the CLA, GLC, GLB, and S-Class. According to Fraunhofer, additional vehicle series will gradually receive the feature as integration expands across the lineup.
Renaming SpatialSound Wave to Audiofields
The research institute also confirmed that its earlier SpatialSound Wave solution has been rebranded as Audiofields. The algorithm can be integrated into existing vehicle audio architectures without requiring extensive hardware changes.
Enhanced Control of In-Car Spatial Audio
The system allows occupants to intuitively adjust the spatial enhancement of stereo audio sources. Instead of sounding as if they originate from speakers, music, voices, and effects appear distributed across a three-dimensional acoustic field throughout the cabin of Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
Transforming the Cabin Listening Experience
By expanding stereo signals into a full spatial environment, Fraunhofer Audiofields 3D audio technology creates a more immersive listening atmosphere that reshapes how occupants interact with digital audio inside modern vehicles.
