Quick Takeaways
  • NFI Group opened a new CAD facility in Winnipeg enabling full domestic production of transit buses.
  • The plant expands manufacturing capacity and supports Canada’s clean transportation transition.

The NFI Group Winnipeg CAD facility has officially opened, marking a major milestone for domestic transit bus manufacturing in Canada. Announced on March 3 by NFI Group Inc. and its subsidiary New Flyer Industries Canada ULC, the new Customer Acceptance and Delivery center enables full domestic production of heavy-duty transit vehicles in Winnipeg for the first time in 15 years, including modern zero-emission buses.

Investment Strengthens Canadian Manufacturing

The project was supported by federal and provincial investment alongside funding from NFI Group itself. The new facility aims to strengthen the domestic supply chain, create skilled manufacturing employment, and accelerate the country’s shift toward clean transportation solutions.

By expanding domestic production capability, the company can support the growing demand for advanced public transit vehicles while reinforcing Canada’s role in the North American mobility manufacturing ecosystem.

Production Expansion and Operational Timeline

Construction of the facility began in late 2024, with production activities starting in September 2025. The plant represents a strategic expansion of manufacturing infrastructure designed to increase output and improve delivery processes for transit customers.

Capacity Growth and Early Deliveries

The Winnipeg site is expected to expand production capacity by up to 240 equivalent units annually by 2027, with four production line entries anticipated each week. The facility already marked a milestone when the first fully Canadian-built bus was delivered to Durham Transit in December 2025.

Strategic Role Across North American Operations

The new facility also allows New Flyer’s manufacturing plants in the United States to concentrate more heavily on serving American transit customers. This operational balance improves production efficiency while maintaining strong regional supply chains across both countries.

With expanded capacity and localized manufacturing, the facility positions Canada to play a greater role in the development and delivery of next-generation transit buses supporting sustainable urban mobility.
