Quick Takeaways
  • Continental eliminated coal and heavy fuel oil across all global tire plants in 2026.
  • The company has reduced tire production CO2 emissions by about 70% since 2019.

Global Shift Away from Fossil Fuels

Continental AG has advanced sustainable manufacturing through its Continental AG tire production decarbonization program. Since January 2026, all 19 tire plants worldwide no longer use coal or heavy fuel oil for steam and heating.

Alternative Energy Sources Across Tire Plants

The company transitioned to a mix of lower-emission energy sources to support production processes. These include biomass, biogas, renewable electricity, and alternative fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas and natural gas.

Renewable Electricity Integration

Electricity used in manufacturing has already come entirely from renewable sources since 2020. The company continues expanding its own renewable generation capacity to strengthen long-term energy resilience and reduce operational emissions.

Emission Reduction Progress

The Continental AG tire production decarbonization effort has delivered measurable climate benefits. Greenhouse-gas intensity declined by more than 10% in 2025 compared with 2024 and by roughly 70% versus 2019 levels. Over the past four years alone, the company has reduced around 180,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from tire manufacturing operations.
