SAIC-VW Begins Production of New Range Extender

The SAIC-VW EA211 range extender has officially rolled off the production line, marking an important milestone in the company’s electrified powertrain development. Announced on March 2, the new range-extending system will make its first appearance in the upcoming ID ERA 9X SUV, which is scheduled to open for pre-orders later this month.

The range-extender unit is derived from the EA211 1.5T EVO II turbocharged engine platform and is engineered to improve efficiency and driving refinement in electrified vehicles. By generating electrical energy to support battery operation, the system helps extend vehicle range while maintaining smooth performance characteristics.

Advanced Turbocharging and Efficiency Enhancements

The system integrates a variable-geometry turbocharger designed to regulate airflow dynamically based on real-time operating conditions. This configuration allows the engine to maintain optimal performance across a wide load range while improving fuel efficiency and response.

A deep Miller combustion cycle is employed alongside a 350-bar high-pressure fuel injection system.
