Quick Takeaways
  • Rivian formalized its EV racing R&D efforts under the Rivian Adventure Department initiative.
  • The team developed the RAD Tuner software enabling customizable drive modes for Gen 2 Quad vehicles.

The Rivian Adventure Department was officially introduced on February 27 as the formal identity for the company’s EV racing research and development work that began in 2022. The initiative consolidates experimental engineering, performance exploration, and software development efforts that push the limits of electric vehicle capability.

Originally operating as a skunkworks-style internal program, the team has evolved into a dedicated group focused on testing vehicle extremes and unlocking new capabilities in production models developed by Rivian.

Dedicated Team Focused on Extreme Vehicle Capabilities

The internal unit, commonly referred to as RAD, brings together designers, engineers, and adventure-focused specialists who work to expand the functional limits of the company’s vehicles. Their role involves identifying performance boundaries and transforming insights from experimental testing into practical features for production platforms.

According to Jeff Hammoud, Chief Design Officer, the initiative reflects the culture driving the automaker’s innovation philosophy.

"RAD represents the living, breathing expression of the passion that defines Rivian. That impulse to explore, to push limits, and to embrace the adventure is not confined to one team,” Hammoud stated.

RAD Tuner Software Enables Real-Time Drive Mode Customization

One of the most significant outcomes of the program is the development of the RAD Tuner, a specialized software system designed for Gen 2 Quad vehicles. The tool allows owners to create and modify custom drive modes in real time based on driving conditions and personal performance preferences.

Key Vehicle Parameters That Can Be Adjusted

The tuning system allows drivers to modify multiple performance characteristics directly from the vehicle interface, enabling deeper control over the electric powertrain and chassis response.

  • Power output calibration
  • Torque distribution between wheels
  • Stability control settings
  • Suspension damping adjustments
  • Brake regeneration intensity

By enabling these configurable parameters, the Rivian Adventure Department contributes to expanding how software-defined electric vehicles can adapt dynamically to different terrains and driving environments while maintaining compatibility with production vehicle platforms.
