- IVECO BUS delivers E-WAY electric buses to ATM S.p.A. in Messina under a 54-vehicle Consip framework agreement.
- The deployment strengthens sustainable mobility with advanced safety, ITS integration and expanded electric fleet capacity.
IVECO BUS has delivered twenty-nine E-WAY electric buses to ATM S.p.A. in Messina, Italy, marking a significant step in the city’s sustainable mobility strategy. The delivery forms part of a broader 54-vehicle procurement under the Consip framework agreement and reinforces the shift toward zero-emission public transport. These E-WAY electric buses integrate advanced charging solutions, digital fleet management capabilities and safety technologies to meet modern urban transit requirements while reducing emissions and operational noise.
Deployment of E-WAY electric buses in Messina
The initial batch of E-WAY electric buses includes 9.5-metre and 12-metre models configured for depot charging operations. The 12-metre variant also supports pantograph charging, enabling operational flexibility across different route structures. The remaining vehicles, currently in production, will consist of twelve 18-metre articulated E-WAY electric buses equipped with pantograph systems to optimize high-capacity urban corridors.
Charging flexibility and operational readiness
The combination of depot charging and pantograph charging ensures that E-WAY electric buses can adapt to varying service demands. Depot charging supports overnight energy replenishment, while pantograph charging allows opportunity charging during service hours, minimizing downtime and maximizing fleet availability for ATM S.p.A.
Advanced Intelligent Transport Systems and ADAS integration
The E-WAY electric buses are equipped with latest-generation Intelligent Transport Systems to enable real-time fleet monitoring and optimized operational planning. These digital capabilities enhance route efficiency, energy management and predictive maintenance. In addition, integrated ADAS features contribute to improved driver assistance and road safety across urban networks.
Safety and accessibility enhancements
Passenger-centric features in the E-WAY electric buses include onboard information systems, a dedicated wheelchair area and boarding ramps designed to improve accessibility. The inclusion of ADAS further strengthens safety standards, supporting collision mitigation and enhanced situational awareness in dense city environments.
Supporting sustainable mobility goals in Italy
The deployment of E-WAY electric buses aligns with Messina’s broader environmental objectives by contributing to improved air quality and reduced urban noise levels. By expanding its electric fleet, ATM S.p.A. reinforces its commitment to sustainable mobility and long-term decarbonization of public transport services.
With eighteen additional electric buses scheduled for delivery by June 2026, the continued rollout of E-WAY electric buses signals a sustained transformation of Messina’s public transportation system toward cleaner, smarter and more efficient urban mobility.
