Nouveau Monde Graphite Strengthens Bécancour Battery Material Plants

Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. announced on February 25 that it has acquired a brownfield site and industrial facilities adjacent to its existing greenfield property in Bécancour, Québec. This strategic move advances the development of its Bécancour Battery Material Plants and enables deployment of the first stage of refining operations aligned with Panasonic Energy’s 13,000-tonnes-per-annum active anode material offtake agreement. The expanded infrastructure reinforces the company’s vertically integrated battery materials strategy in North America.

Brownfield and Greenfield Site Integration

The newly acquired 143,000-square-meter brownfield site includes a 22,000-square-meter industrial facility and is contiguous with the company’s 200,000-square-meter greenfield property. Together, these assets provide the foundation for a structured two-stage development plan under the Phase-2 Bécancour Battery Material Plants program, enabling scalable refining and processing capabilities.

Active Anode Material Production for Panasonic Energy

The upgraded Bécancour Battery Material Plants will deliver 13,000 tonnes per annum of active anode material dedicated to Panasonic Energy. The material will support battery cell manufacturing at Panasonic Energy’s facilities in Nevada and Kansas, strengthening localized battery supply chains across North America.

Meeting Technical and Quality Specifications

Production at the brownfield facility will adhere strictly to Panasonic Energy’s technical and quality requirements. This ensures that the active anode material meets performance standards necessary for advanced lithium-ion battery applications.

Full Integration from Ore to Battery Materials

The Bécancour Battery Material Plants form part of a vertically integrated value chain that begins with graphite extraction at the Phase-2 Matawinie Mine. Graphite concentrate from Matawinie will be refined in Bécancour into active anode material, establishing a streamlined pathway from ore to finished battery-grade materials.

By consolidating mining, refining, and material conversion within Québec, Nouveau Monde Graphite enhances supply security, operational efficiency, and scalability within its Bécancour Battery Material Plants strategy.
