International Vienna Motor Symposium 2026 Highlights Global Powertrain Strategy

The International Vienna Motor Symposium will return to the Hofburg Palace from April 22 to 24, 2026, bringing together more than 1,000 participants from over 20 countries. Organised by the Austrian Society for Automotive Engineering since 1985, the International Vienna Motor Symposium remains one of the most influential platforms for discussing future mobility across land, water, and air transport. With around 100 specialist presentations planned, the 2026 edition will focus on technology diversity, regulatory pressures, and the accelerating transformation of global propulsion systems.

Technology-Neutral Convergence at the International Vienna Motor Symposium

At a Vienna press briefing, ?VK President Prof. Bernhard Geringer emphasised the need for technology-neutral convergence. He argued that no single solution?whether battery electric, hydrogen, hybrid powertrain technology, eFuels, or advanced combustion?can universally meet global mobility demands. Instead, regional infrastructure, raw material access, and vehicle application must guide decision-making.

A Complex Technology Landscape

Prof. Stefan Pischinger of RWTH Aachen University warned against framing propulsion development as a binary debate. Addressing CO2 fleet targets and industrial transformation speed, he highlighted that future mobility requires a resilient and diversified portfolio. According to his assessment, regulation, market demand, and engineering readiness must evolve together to sustain competitiveness and environmental progress.

Supplier Industry at a Strategic Crossroads

Matthias Zink of Schaeffler AG and CLEPA underlined the European supply sector?s economic importance, noting that suppliers account for up to 75 percent of vehicle component value and support roughly 1.7 million jobs. Annual investments of approximately ?45 billion reflect the sector?s commitment to innovation, yet global competition and shifting production volumes continue to pressure operations.

Zink welcomed the European Commission?s Automotive Package as a constructive attempt to align climate objectives with economic sustainability. However, he urged manufacturers and suppliers to reinforce entrepreneurship, innovation, and customer orientation to remain globally competitive.

AI and Advanced Hybrid Powertrain Technology

Artificial intelligence is set to play a central role at the International Vienna Motor Symposium. Geoffrey Bouquot of Audi described AI in automotive development as a catalyst for shorter development cycles, enhanced quality, and personalised vehicle interfaces. The focus is gradually shifting from purely mechanical optimisation toward scalable, software-driven engineering frameworks.

• AVL and Chery will introduce a hybrid gasoline engine targeting 48 percent efficiency for range extender applications.
• Toyota and Volkswagen will present next-generation plug-in and hybrid powertrain technology systems.
• BMW will unveil details of its GEN6 battery-electric drivetrain architecture.
• Porsche, Mahle, and Lamborghini will showcase high-performance hybrid systems for sports and hypercar segments.
• Audi and Mercedes will present advanced diesel engines with integrated hybridisation.

Hydrogen Combustion Engine and Commercial Vehicle Focus

Hydrogen combustion engine solutions will receive significant attention, particularly for heavy-duty and commercial vehicle applications. Cummins plans to present a heavy-duty hydrogen combustion engine, while FAW Group will reveal hydrogen strategies for commercial fleet decarbonisation. AVL, together with Scania, will showcase a high-pressure direct injection hydrogen system reportedly achieving 60 percent efficiency.

Regulatory divergence remains a challenge. European frameworks prioritise electrification, parts of Asia support hydrogen expansion, and the United States continues to rely heavily on combustion platforms. TRATON Group leadership will address these global contrasts, while Tata Group will introduce a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine family tailored for international markets.

China SAE Forum and Expanding Global Dialogue

For the first time, the symposium will host a dedicated Forum for Sustainable Drive Technologies in cooperation with China SAE. Discussions will include analysis of China?s Technology Roadmap 3.0 and a review of European CO2 regulatory benchmarks. Representatives from Great Wall Motors, AVL, and SERESPower are scheduled to contribute, reinforcing cross-continental knowledge exchange.

The International Vienna Motor Symposium is expected to welcome delegates from Brazil, China, Germany, France, India, Italy, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States, underscoring its status as a central platform for global propulsion strategy dialogue.
