Quick Takeaways
  • Strategic onsemi–GlobalFoundries collaboration accelerates commercialization of 200mm GaN-on-silicon power devices.
  • 650V GaN platform targets EV power electronics, data centers, and energy systems with higher efficiency and scalability.
On December 18, onsemi gallium nitride power products moved closer to large-scale commercialization as onsemi confirmed a collaboration with GlobalFoundries to jointly develop and manufacture next-generation GaN power devices. The partnership focuses on leveraging advanced 200mm GaN-on-silicon technology to meet rising efficiency and power density demands across automotive, industrial, and data center applications.
onsemi Gallium Nitride Power Products for High-Efficiency Systems
The collaboration centers on GlobalFoundries’ enhanced-mode GaN process on 200mm wafers, beginning with a 650V platform designed for high-performance power conversion. According to onsemi, initial customer sampling is planned for the first half of 2026, followed by a rapid transition to volume manufacturing to support growing global demand.
Under this agreement, onsemi will integrate its silicon-based gate drivers, intelligent controllers, and thermally optimized packaging with GlobalFoundries’ 650V GaN technology. This combination is intended to deliver compact, highly efficient power solutions that reduce energy losses while improving overall system performance.
Key target benefits include:
  • Higher power density for space-constrained designs
  • Improved switching efficiency and thermal performance
  • Scalable manufacturing using 200mm wafer processes

Expanding Applications Across Automotive and Energy Markets
The jointly developed GaN devices are expected to address a wide range of end markets. In the automotive sector, onsemi gallium nitride power products will support onboard chargers and DC-DC converters for electric vehicles, enabling faster charging and lighter power electronics. Beyond mobility, the solutions are also designed for AI data center power supplies, renewable energy systems, and advanced industrial equipment.
Planned application areas include:
  • Power supplies and DC-DC converters for AI data centers
  • EV onboard chargers and high-efficiency DC-DC converters
  • Solar microinverters and energy storage systems
  • Motor drives and power electronics for industrial, aerospace, defense, and security uses

By combining GaN process expertise with system-level power electronics know-how, the collaboration aims to accelerate adoption of GaN technology in demanding, high-voltage environments while ensuring reliable, high-volume manufacturing readiness.
