Kia Niro PHEV Discontinued in the U.S. as Market Strategy Shifts

Kia has confirmed that the Kia Niro PHEV discontinued decision will take effect in the U.S., with the plug-in hybrid version being removed from its lineup. The move reflects changing market conditions, even as the automaker retains the standard hybrid and fully electric Niro models in its portfolio.

Kia Niro lineup reshaped for the U.S. market

Despite the Kia Niro PHEV discontinued update, the Niro nameplate continues in two electrified formats. Kia has indicated that it will still offer plug-in hybrid options in its U.S. range through other models, specifically the Sportage and Sorento crossovers, maintaining a broader PHEV presence beyond the Niro.

Hybrid powertrain details remain unchanged

The Kia Niro hybrid that continues in the U.S. pairs a 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine with a 32kW electric motor. This setup delivers a combined output of 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, balancing efficiency with everyday drivability for urban and highway use.

Market pressures and pricing challenges

While several automakers are scaling back plug-in hybrid offerings in the U.S., the Niro stood out as one of the more affordable PHEV options. However, its import status from South Korea exposed it to U.S. tariffs, adding pricing pressure in a segment that has become increasingly competitive. The Niro first went on sale in the U.S. in 2017 as a gasoline-electric hybrid. A plug-in hybrid variant followed in 2028, and an all-electric version was initially offered in select states before expanding nationwide in 2022. A full redesign arrived in 2023, increasing the vehicle’s size while consolidating three distinct powertrain choices. With the Kia Niro PHEV discontinued, Kia appears to be sharpening its focus on hybrids and battery-electric vehicles that align more closely with current U.S. demand patterns, while continuing to support plug-in hybrids through other crossover models in its lineup.
